Did you know the Tauhou (Silvereye) wasn't always part of Aotearoa's birdlife?

It's believed these tiny birds were blown across the Tasman Sea by a storm many years ago. Their Māori name, Tauhou, means "stranger" or "new arrival."

Over time, they made New Zealand their home and are now recognised as one of our treasured native birds.

Did you know that spending time around a campfire has been linked to reduced stress, improved mood, and a greater sense of connection?

Maybe it's the crackling flames. Maybe it's slowing down. Or maybe it's simply spending uninterrupted time with the people you're with.

Add toasted marshmallows and a sky full of stars, and you've got one of our guests' favourite ways to end the day.

What's your favourite campfire memory?

Your holiday helps protect something bigger.

When you stay with us, you're helping restore native habitat, support ongoing pest control, and protect endangered wildlife like kiwi and weka.

It's one of the reasons our park is one of the few places in New Zealand where you can experience kiwi in the wild.

Thank you for helping nature thrive. 💚

It's not just kiwi or native birds you'll encounter at the park...

We were lucky enough to spot a Pūriri moth recently – one of New Zealand's largest and most fascinating native insects.

Seeing one in the wild is rare! Here's why:
- They spend 5–6 years as a caterpillar living inside the Pūriri tree (some other trees as well).
- As an adult, they live for just 48 hours.
- They don't have a functioning mouth, so they can't eat – they survive on energy stored from their caterpillar stage.
- They're only active at night, spending their short adult life finding a mate and laying eggs.

Found only in the North Island of New Zealand, a glimpse of a Pūriri moth really is a special wildlife moment.

It's just another reminder that when you stay with surrounded by nature, you never know what amazing native species you might discover.

Have you ever been lucky enough to see a Pūriri moth?

We're taking a little winter break to give our team a well-earned rest and get the park ready for spring.

We'll be closed from 19 July to 14 September, except for the weeks of 27 July and 10 August, when we'll be open for guests.

Our resident kiwi will be keeping watch while we're away (hopefully no midnight bush parties!).

If you're planning a winter escape the weeks of 27 July and 10 August, don't forget, you can enjoy 20% off stays of 2 nights or more and late 2pm checkout with code WINTER26.

We're excited to share that we've been named a Finalist for the Improvement Award – Large Park in the 2026 Holiday Parks New Zealand Awards!

This is in recognition of our 'Switching TVs for Kiwis' Initiative.

Last year, we removed televisions from all of our accommodation to encourage our guests to unplug, slow down and reconnect with what really matters—nature, each other, and the incredible wildlife that calls Russell-Orongo Bay Holiday Park home.

It was a bold decision, but now every stay is now an opportunity to listen for kiwi calling at night, and maybe even see one in the wild, spot native birds during the day, share stories around the campfire, and create memories without a screen getting in the way.

We are proud to be recognised as a finalist for this initiative. A huge thank you to our amazing team and to every guest who has embraced our vision of helping people reconnect with nature.

We're taking a little break for a few weeks over winter to give our team a well-earned break and to get the park ready for another season.

Check out our bookings page for closure dates.

While we're away, our resident kiwi will be keeping watch over the park (we're trusting them not to host any midnight parties in the bush!).

Thank you to everyone who has stayed with us and supported us this year. We love sharing this special place with you and can't wait to welcome you back.

We look forward to seeing you as spring begins to arrive. The bush will be bursting back to life, the birds will be busy, and if you're already thinking of a spring escape, now's the perfect time to start planning.
