Harbourview Tairua, a great place to stay and the ideal base for touring the beautiful Coromandel.

NEW FOR 2026 Harbourview Tairua is now available as self-contained accommodation, ideal for short or longer stays, for two to four guests. It’s a great place to stay; a spacious and comfortable one- or two bedroom apartment on the ground floor, each with its own bathroom and deck. There’s a separate lounge/kitchenette, with fridge, microwave and toaster, which opens onto a sub-tropical garden with dining table, 6m swimming pool and BBQ, and of course our incredible views over the ever-changing tidal Harbour to Mount Paku.

PLEASE NOTE, BREAKFAST IS NOT PROVIDED

Harbourview Tairua. You’ll love it here!!

And Harbourview Tairua is the perfect location for exploring. The world famous Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove are just 30 minutes away; Whangamata, Whitianga and Thames are 40 minutes' drive and Coromandel Town just 75.

There are free off-road parking spaces, and free wifi.

Tairua is a treasure too. The long, dune-backed ocean beach rivals any on the Pacific coast and is famed for its magnificent surf and golden sand. Mount Paku dominates the horizon as well as offering amazing views from the summit. There’s a thriving community, with excellent restaurants, cafes, galleries and shops , lots of great walks and cycle tracks, a golf course – and year-round fishing. Harborview is just five minutes' walk from the town centre and estuary beaches and a short drive or 20-minute walk to the ocean beach.

The Harbourview at dawn today.. this is by way of announcing that we will no longer be operating as a B&B from season 2025/6. After nine seasons (give or take a couple lost to Covid) we are hanging up our welcome mat, cleaning gloves and egg whisks, and looking forward to a new stage in our lives. We will continue to live here (as long as we can pay the mortgage), and will miss the regular arrivals of our wonderful guests from all over the world. But we should have bit more time to explore Aotearoa in the summer! Thanks and best wishes to everyone who has made The Harbourview a part of their NZ experience - you are all welcome to call in if ever you are passing this way again. Lots of love, Jane & Chris

The Harbourview season came to a quiet end in late April, so now we have a break until reopening in October for the 2023/24 season. After the rains and cyclones of January and February, the last couple of months have seen fine weather and balmy late summer temperatures. We've certainly had lots of 'thumbs ups' from our guests these last few weeks.

Although the main route across the Peninsula is still closed after a major slip in January, the coastal roads have remained open, so even though our guests spent a little longer getting here, they also had a chance to enjoy both of our main coastlines, west and/or east on the way. The walkway to our world-famous Cathedral Cove has also been closed after slips, but here too there have been other options for our guests to take them to see the Cove – kayak tours, water-taxi, touring boats. One guest took advantage of the taxi ride by diving into the sea and swimming through the Cove itself! And it has been a chance for us to showcase all our other great and varied beaches as an alternative.

This week’s good news is that work is starting soon to restore the main road route – with a bridge the chosen option to cross the gap. Work is expected to be completed in early 2024. Yay!

We celebrated the end of our season in late April (also my birthday) with a trip to Lake Rotoiti, near Rotorua, for a day’s trout fishing, courtesy of some friends - and a visit to the lakeside hot pools (followed by a dive into the lake itself).

On the way home we walked the trail to the top of the North Island’s highest waterfall, Waiwere Falls. It’s a 90-minute return walk to the viewing point for the best shot of the falls themselves, or a three-hour return walk to the top, not too strenuous, for spectacular views across the Hauraki Plains – and of the waterfall as it disappears over the edge. Waiwere is almost exactly halfway between Harbourview and Rotorua, and we would certainly recommend a stop there to all our guests as part of their itinerary.

For the final leg of the trip home, we took the west coast road, via Thames, reminding ourselves how beautiful it is, as it mostly hugs the coast – in contrast to the east coast, which is much more hilly. The Coromandel mussel boats were all out in force (most of the famous NZ green-lip mussels come from this bay), and our final treat was a stop at the Coromandel Oyster Company for a dozen freshly harvested oysters.

Bookings are coming in thick and fast for next season, especially November and February, and we expect to be fully booked by September. So, if you like the idea of a Coromandel visit, we’d love to have you stay with us.

A NEW SEASON IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!
The new Harbourview sign is proudly hanging outside, the renovations ARE almost complete and we are (just about) ready to welcome our first guests of season 2022/3 – after a gap of almost exactly two years and six months since lockdown struck. It’s taken a while to get ready, with a few finishing touches still to go. When we moved here in 2016, it’s now hard to believe that we had TWO DAYS between moving in and the first guests arriving. But now, after this long enforced break, we are actually feeling quite nervous and apprehensive! Bookings for this season are running at about 50% of our last full season – as we expected – with most coming Jan-April. So we have a nice quiet start to get back into the swing of things. More to follow...
PS. At least our mountain is still there. Seven million years and counting.

GETTING READY FOR NEXT SUMMER!!

After almost three years, New Zealand’s borders will be reopening shortly – in time for our next summer season. Here in Tairua, two full summers have been and gone, while The Harbourview has been more or less closed. But now we are excited to be getting ready for the 2022/23 season, and bookings have been steadily coming in already.
We have used some of our time without guests for some renovation and decoration, including relining our swimming pool and replacing some of the decks. And we have had time ourselves to explore some beautiful parts of the Coromandel that we had not seen yet. This weekend, in the gorgeous autumn sunshine, we took a couple of detours off the Cathedral Cove walkway to the two smaller bays almost at the beginning of the walk. ‘Gemstone’ is the first – rocky, but ideal for snorkeling, with a route marked around the bay which takes in different depths and habitats (snorkel gear can be hired locally). Next along is Stingray Bay, a small, picture-perfect sandy beach. We finished our walk with a swim at the magnificent Hahei beach, in our view the best in the area for swimming, as the waves are nearly always gentle.
Other trips have included two of the Coromandel’s top walks. About an hour south of Tairua is the Wentworth Valley, with a great three-hour return walk to a waterfall (or a much longer walk right into the heart of the Coromandel Ranges). A couple of hours north of us, on the east coast past Coromandel town, is Waikawau. As well as a huge beach (we saw a pod of dolphins) the other highlight is a three-hour return trek along the river valley and then up and along a mountain ridge, with spectacular views across the Ranges and along both coastlines.
There has also been a bit of spare time to try out a few of the other great Coromandel golf courses, apart from our own local one. So far, we have played seven different ones, all under an hour from home, all very high standard, friendly – and with $20 green fees for 18 holes!
And yes, it is autumn here, clocks have just gone back an hour, daylight ends earlier each day, but our sunsets are stunning and the surf is spectacular this time of year. Otherwise, it is just like summer!
We are so looking forward to welcoming our international guests again next season, and will be reopening from early October. Get in touch, or speak to your travel company about making a booking.

May Mists, Moons and Monster Seas
It’s been quite a week in Tairua, nature-wise! It all started calmly with autumnal mists over the harbour, looking as if the water was about to boil. A couple of days later a huge storm descended from the Tropics, bringing very strong winds and high seas – but no rain (the next town north from here was flooded though!). By the end of the week the skies were clear again, so we had a perfect view of the total lunar eclipse . We watched the two-hour spectacular from the Harbourview front deck, as the Earth's shadow suddenly appeared in one corner of the bright full moon, spread right across the surface, stayed there for about 20 minutes and slowly cleared away again.

For any businesses out there wondering if it is worth the expense of commissioning a professional photographer, our message would be – ‘go for it’. It did take a while to find a suitably sunny day, but Dmitri duly arrived, camera at the ready, and left us a great stock of Harbourview images, inside and out. The opening shot, of the pool, garden and north-facing side of the building, was one we have been trying to capture ourselves for four years but, let’s be honest, we just didn’t have the right gear. He also managed to build The Harbourview itself into many of the shots, especially from the main lounge and breakfast deck, but also from the bedrooms. A couple more featured the shady alcove and bbq corner, the downstairs guest lounge, and one of the decks outside the guest bedrooms. Finally, he trekked to the top of the mountain for a shot taken across the water, showing our location relative to the rest of beautiful Tairua

ON REFLECTION… there are few better places to be than Tairua and the Coromandel. This image shows our corner of town, reflected in the still waters just after low tide out in the Harbour. (Harbourview is at the end of the arrow). It’s ‘winter’ here now, so mostly quiet, and with a mix of wet and windy and clear and sunny days. It’s also a time of reflection for us as we face up to the possibility that international visitors may not be heading this way for a while.

So, as a new venture for us, we will be offering Harbourview for holiday rental from October to April. With garden and swimming pool and three ground floor bedrooms, all with bathroom, we can easily accommodate a family or group of six. And our comfy first floor lounge, kitchen, dining table and extensive deck – all with amazing views across the water to Mt Paku – make this a great place to stay for a Coromandel summer holiday. The Tui photo in the banksia was taken through the kitchen window!

All this can be booked with BACHCARE from $182 per night for the whole house!
