Um, so either I’ve just photographed the rediscovery of the century… or Beau Vista has become the country’s most ambitious wildlife corridor.

Tata beach this evening. Pure millpond. If it wasn't for a tui and the tiniest whisper of the sea flopping quietly against the sand, you could hear a pin drop. 😍 Apparently there's rain tomorrow .. for a day .. then it's back to 🌤️🌞😎 It's a tough life.

Beau Vista Pohara studio is looking so inviting and ready for our next guests ... They return every year and this time they're staying for three whole weeks! February is one of my favourite months in Golden Bay. The weather is often settled, the sea is warm and clear, the cicadas are chirping, and the grapes on the deck are ripe for the picking. 😍

Thursday evening and it's the start of the long Waitangi weekend and the annual Pohara Fishing Competition. From where I'm lying, it looks like it's going to be a beauty! Wish us luck for a kingi tomorrow and happy Waitangi day! Ngā mihi o te Rā o Waitangi

Not really the way I had hoped to meet my first native shining cockoo up close and personal. But the poor wee thing flew into our window and took several minutes to come to. I had no idea how stunning its iridescent green plumage is. Such an amazing elusive bird. I found out that it’s a juvenile Shining Cuckoo (Pīpīwharauroa) possibly female — the softer barring and muted green show it’s only a few months old.
They’re New Zealand-born migrants, but raised by grey warblers, not by their own parents.
Despite their size, they make a 2,500 km nonstop flight to the Pacific Islands in autumn, navigating entirely by instinct.
