Have you heard of the Taupo Volcanic Zone? It stretches from Mt Ruapehu to the Bay of Plenty with numerous volcanic vents and geothermal fields.

Orakei Korako Cave & Thermal Park, just north of Taupo, is part of this zone and one of the most geothermally active areas in the world.

The Sapphire Geyser, located at the foot of Cascade Terrace pictured here, has eruptions that can last several minutes and eject steaming fluid up to one metre into the air.
