Today we said goodbye to our kind and generous Ian Burns. A solid Rotarian since 1997 he was always there and ready to lend a hand particularly in environmental projects. We were so pleased to see him back at the Club last week and again the same night for social times together. And suddenly, he has gone. Rest in peace Ian. You will be missed.

Welcome back! Friday 29th saw about 13 past members visiting. "It was just like coming home" was a common saying. Lovely to see everyone and we hope to see you back again soon. Also a sad farewell to Kevin. You have given so much to our club and to the communities that we serve.

Friday 15th May was an interesting mix of activities. Our speakers were especially interesting. Joey McKenzie and Rowan Johnston from the Port of Tauranga about the lengths they go to maintain infrastructure within a delicate environment. Lots of questions and answers followed. However........at the end of the meeting the Pink Shirt brigade took over. With much laughter and jostling we posed in our pink attire (some made better efforts than others) to raise money for mental health prevention. ....................Pink Shirt Day is led by the Mental Health Foundation with support from InsideOUT, the Peace Foundation, New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA), Te Kaha O Te Rangatahi Indigenous Youth Hub, Te Kāhui Tika Tangata Human Rights Commission, Cook Islands Development Agency and Asian Family Services.

This weeks speaker was Louise Saunders, CEO Manaki Kaimai Mamaku Charitable Trust. Interesting to hear how they have joined a number of organisations working in the same conservation kaupapa but together, thereby creating serious impact in the field. Interesting to hear the financial side of it and how they manage it for much greater bang for buck. Would like to hear more about how our investments achieve more than ever before.

One of the great services that Rotary offers is a student exchange. Tauranga Sunrise has participated in this programme often. We have hosted students from all over the world and we learn from them as much as they learn from us. At the moment we have El'e from France. A beautiful bright young woman. With friends: Glenn Dougal and Debbie Green (1st host family), Jeneene Brader (2nd host-mum) and Lissy Brader-Steed (host sister who has just returned from a Rotary exchange in Belgium), Kate Barry-Piceno & Craig Bachelor (current host family) and Jen Scoular (final host from May)
