Better late than never - our first post AND snow! ❄️❄️❄️☃️

Whoop whoop...what a difference a good 'ol southerly storm system makes.

We are rapt to finally post you some exciting news [its taken a couple of months]...we are over the 1 metre mark at Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu, coverage is EXCELLENT, the Valley T, Knoll T, and Delta Chair are spinning and the West Ridge Chair is next on the list! For the first time in 2 years, as soon as the wind abates its gonna be all go! Hope to follow in a week or so the Far West T!

We hope you can make it these holidays and over the next few weeks...the spring skiing is going to be epic.

Pop in and grab some gear...its tuned and sitting there ready to go.

A huge 👍👍 and thank you to Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu and Pure Turoa for making the snow and getting things going this winter, mother nature has just put the icing on the cake! ⛷🏂🗻🏔

The Snowscene crew went up to Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu skifield to sus out the skiing.

IT. IS. EPIC!

Massive thank you to the Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu team for making the snow, prepping the runs, keeping the lifts spinning and making the place what it is – MAGIC!

For what snow cover we have, the skiing is very good.

It is very cold which means the guns are a pumpin’ all night to leave a real nice powder on top of a pretty good base.

All of Happy Valley has good cover and it gets topped up daily with the snow guns leaving the snow just perfect for beginners – no slush, nice coating on top and easy to ski and ride. Two carpets and the Double Happy Chair keeps everyone moving and there are no queues.

The Rangatira Express Chairlift makes a quick trip to midfield where the Rockgarden Trail starts and winds its way back to base. Once again, a very good base considering there is no natural cover outside the trail but because it is cold the guns are keeping it topped up nicely and its not thawing.

Up top via the Sky Waka the Valley T and the Delta Chair have a couple of good runs on natural snow for the more advanced skier/boarder.

For some more runs and terrain, an extra three-quarts of an hour gets you to PURE TUROA. ALL LIFTS ARE OPEN from today, how epic is that! We may not have the cover of other years but all our customers have been having a blast. A big thank you to the Pure Turoa team for making it happen.

So what are you waiting for!

Grab the kids, grab your gear from us on the way to the maunga, and enjoy some seriously great family fun.

PS, here’s a hint…come up midweek, for $59 [adult] or $39 [youth] the lower mountain pass is so worth it. No queues and loads of family fun.

Also, did you know that pulling the kids out of school is actually outdoor education? Our local schools go up every week as part of their curriculum.

SNOWSCENE FOR ALL YOUR GEAR : WHAKAPAPA : MIDWEEK – that’s all you need to know really!

PPS, heres a quick vid of the Rockgarden Trail woop woop!

SEE YOU SOON AT SNOWSCENE SKI & BOARD!

We wish to advise we will be closed all day on Wednesday 20th September for a family bereavement.

Our co-founder of Snowscene, Bryan Hayes, passed away last Thursday.

Bryan and Gwen took over Tokaanu Ski Hire from Kenny Hale back in 1981 and they spent 35 winters at the shop, slowly building it up and investing in good gear and tuning machinery to make what it is today.

It was a second career for Bryan who was a teacher/headmaster for the first half of his life and after realising the opportunity to make a living from the ever growing recreational skiing market that they chose to make this their thing and so Bryan gave up teaching in the mid 80's.

The 80s and 90s saw snow related activities boom in NZ. RAL was going strong and benefiting from the growth and re-investing in lift and infrastructure. Good old fashioned service was the key to Tokaanu Ski Hire's success with good products, pricing, and flexibility being the key to its success.

Bryan and Gwen were well loved and respected and from this built up a great business and we are now seeing second and third generations come through. Bryan and Gwen's grandson and son-in-law are striving to continue the great vibes and service that they always offered, hopefully continuing on past the 42 years that it has been going.

Bryans funeral is on Wednesday 20th at 1.30pm at the Founders Chapel of Remembrance - Rickit St, Taupo.

Rest easy now Bryan, thank you for your contribution to the local ski scene over the past 35 years!

GREAT update from the team at Mt Ruapehu.

We are super stoked to be open for the 2023 season! Long may the snow storms keep coming through August and September 🌨❄️🌨❄️🌨❄️

The Mt Ruapehu crew are doing a pretty amazing job getting things going - thanks HEAPS guys n gals! 🗻🗻🏔⛷🏂🏄🏂⛷🏂⛷

Here is the latest update from Travis.

Kia ora,

It has been a great four or so weeks at Mt Ruapehu. During the school holidays, we saw a huge demand from first-time snow seekers, and we were very pleased to get some lifts going for skiing and riding, earlier than what has been possible in the last few years.

At Whakapapa, we started some upper mountain riding on July 15th with the Valley T-Bar and the Delta joining on July 22nd. It's also been great to have the snow down low, allowing us to run the Double Happy in the beginner's area for the first time since 2021. At Tūroa, both the Movenpick and Parklane were out of the gate early, and The Giant made its debut on the 15th too. In some areas, at the start of this week, we were starting to look a little light on snow again (the storm that arrived Tuesday night looks to be fantastically timed though), and we've also had to contend with some big de-icing missions.

On the timing of lift openings, it is worth me touching again on the size of our 2023 team, and commending this lean team for the mahi they have been putting in. The pinch in resource is being most keenly felt in lift ops (including de-icers) and maintenance. There are lifts we absolutely would have liked to have opened sooner but have had just out of our reach. This in part comes back to the timing of storm cycles, but really, it mostly comes down to how well we were able to hire against a changing backdrop and an 11th-hour approval to open the season. Recruitment is ongoing, particularly in the pinch areas mentioned above, and we have paid advertising underway to give us the best chance of reaching relevant people and encouraging them to apply. If we can keep staffing up, we will see our goal of maximum terrain and lift up-time become easier and easier.

The next lifts we would expect to see are the Knoll Ridge T-Bar (which will be ready on or before this weekend) and the High Noon Express (which may open Sunday). We thought we should let you know now that the Noon won't be ready for Saturday, as much as it pains us to say it and as much as we would love it to be. But if a few things go our way, we should see it Sunday.

From there, at Whakapapa, we head West, with trails and T-lines already underway (the earliest we have been able to do this in about 5 years). We are now watching for the opportune weather window to install the haul rope on the Far West T-Bar. At or around the same time, we will welcome back the West Ridge Quad - again for the first time since 2021. At this point, all planned lifts will be underway on both sides of the mountain. At Tūroa, the Nga Wai Heke remains out of plan and inactive- for now.

So please, spread the good word and come out and see us. Have some fun and support the Ruapehu community. Snow is currently falling and in line with the above, we are now moving in to “winter proper”, with twelve weeks of the season still ahead of us.

Nga mihi nui,

Travis Donoghue
Chief Operating Officer
Ruapehu Alpine Lifts
