Tongariro Alpine Crossing — Open Again
A dramatic perspective from above…
Recent Copernicus Sentinel-2 data, captured on 15 November 2025 from ~786 km above Earth, reveals the burn scar left after the recent wildfire in Tongariro National Park. The deep red tones highlight vegetation loss north-west of Mt Ngauruhoe, showing just how close fire came to some of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes.

Nature can be dramatic, but also deeply resilient. This time-lapse from GeoNet & Taranaki Media captures the recent fire near Tongariro National Park. Thanks to response teams, the fire has been subdued — no homes or lodges were lost.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing remains closed until 17 November.
A rāhui has also been placed over the affected area — a protective Māori tikanga (custom) that restricts access temporarily to allow for healing of the land (mauri) and the relationships between people, place and nature.
