Latest update from Pure Turoa!!

Tūroa Ski Area is thrilled to announce its official winter opening, with, hospitality and snow play kicking off in Alpine Meadow from Saturday 31 May, and the ski and snowboard season set to launch on Saturday 28 June, perfectly timed for the start of the school holidays.

“It’s been a challenging time for the Central Plateau region, and we want to reassure everyone that Tūroa and Ohakune are very much open for winter. Come out and support the amazing tourism and hospitality businesses, and communities who deserve a great season,” concluded Joanna.

Offering New Zealand’s longest winter ski season, The ski area is expected to remain open for sightseeing and snow play until 5 October, with upper mountain skiing and boarding continuing through the October long weekend, weather and snow conditions permitting.

Whakapapa’s future just got real.

Whakapapa Holdings Limited (WHL) has — with pride and elation — received its new concession to operate Whakapapa Ski Area.

More than a step forward — this is the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for. “This is the moment the team has been working toward for two and a half years,” says WHL Director Tom Elworthy. “The concession doesn’t just represent progress — it marks a new starting point. It gives us the certainty we’ve been missing, and everything flows from here. Whakapapa has a future — and it starts now.”

The concession approval enables WHL to complete the final steps toward ownership. The transaction process is well underway and expected to conclude shortly.

More updates soon — including 2025 season passes, opening dates, and what’s in store for winter.

This day-walk to Tama Lakes and Taranaki Falls is a beautiful alternative to the Tongariro Crossing.
Limited for time? Terrible weather? or if your energy levels arent quite what they used to be then this is the track for you.
The well-maintained track swings past the impressive Taranaki Falls, before taking you between two of Tongariro National Park’s active volcanoes; Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, to reach the two lakes (sitting in craters left over from old vent explosions).
The trailhead for this walk is shared between Tama Lakes, Taranaki Falls and the Tongariro Northern Circuit. The track starts directly from within Whakapapa Village in Tongariro National Park, which is handy! Swing by the information centre on the way if you end up needing directions, its definantly worth the stop either way.
