Up-a-Bubba : Babywearing Consultant and Postpartum Doula

Up-a-Bubba : Babywearing Consultant and Postpartum Doula I come from a small town in Zimbabwe, and would often see the locals wearing their babies on their backs as they went about the day. That was my "ah ha" moment.

Sling & Carrier Consultant and Postpartum Doula with a passion to support and enable parents in the Waikato, volunteer at Waikato Baby Carriers, your local community group One day our nanny took my unsettled, fussy, colicky baby and wrapped him onto my back, with in minutes he was quiet, content and asleep. Fast forward 10 years, now living in NZ, when my second son came along I decided to attend

a babywearing meet. So many options were available, ring slings, stretchies, woven wraps, mei teis, soft structured carriers, where to start? I jumped right in and emerged later with a love of woven wraps and a passion for babywearing. It has comforted my daughter when she has been sick and I have needed to prepare dinner, it has strengthened the bond with my son as we have walked along the river and I have heard him babbling in my ear as we discuss all things we see, it has provided safety and security for many foster babies and toddlers who have arrived at my door overwhelmed and scared. I can go, I have experienced so many benefits that come with babywearing. I would like to help you navigate your way through the different carriers so that you may find one that suites your needs, so that you too can have that "ah ha" moment and begin to experience the benefits of wearing your baby close to your heart. With close to 10 years experience as a newborn foster mum I have realised there is not a lot of support for new mums and sometimes life can be pretty full on and as a mum we never put ourselves first or find it hard to ask for help . This is why I have started to offer postpartum support here in Hamilton. I want to help make things a little easier for you and walk along beside you as you navigate the 4th trimester.

๐ŸŒฟ Babywearing Week Downunder: Waikato
This week (March 9โ€“15), we join families across Aotearoa to celebrate the connection, convenience, and "everyday magic" of carrying our pฤ“pi close.
Why We Wear Our Babies
Bonding: Supports emotional connection and responsiveness.
Freedom: Navigate the Hamilton Gardens or the supermarket hands-free!
Support: Helps with unsettled babies and early parenting transitions.
Safety First: The T.I.C.K.S. Check
Our theme for 2026 is TICKScheck. Before you head out, ensure baby is:
Tight: Carrier is firm and secure.
In view: You can see babyโ€™s face just by looking down.
Close enough to kiss: Their head should be right under your chin.
Keep chin off chest: Ensure a clear airway (at least one finger gap).
Supported back: Baby should be in a snug, natural position.
๐Ÿ“ Local Support in Hamilton
Waikato Baby Carriers is here to help you find the perfect fit. We offer:
Expert Advice: Support from trained babywearing educators.
Sling Library: Try various carriers before you buy.
Fit-Checks: Troubleshooting for comfort and safety.
Community: A welcoming space to connect with other local parents.
Get Involved: Find us on Facebook at or or visit babywearingaotearoa.co.nz for local event info and safety resources.

Reading stories like yhis, not only brings a smile to my face but make me really happy. A real super hero moment for mum. She has persevered, kept trying and had her moment :)))

Hey Shelly!! Hope you are well!! Iโ€™m getting so much better at the ring sling! Just a little story for you- my bub is knackered from a morning out and about and was sleeping in his car seat. I had to pick up my fruit box- where I have to park on the road and get out of the car. I donโ€™t normally take him with me but it was the easiest choice today. Popped the ring sling on, woke him when I unbuckled him, snuggled him in, collected my box, put him back in the car seat & within secondsโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ™Œ carrier sleepy dust for the win!!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ I couldnโ€™t even work out how to put the darn thing on just a few months ago, and now I can carry a heavy fruit box & a baby at the same time AND keep the baby snoozy!!!! ๐Ÿฅฐ big thanks to you!! Your consult really kept me motivated and itโ€™s so worth it!

Almost two and still plenty of carrying to be done with the Carifit core. I love that this carrier can go from newborn to toddler with ease and has great support and comfort for both mum and bubs. The core comes with Magnetic closures. Which makes it pretty easy and fast to put on.

I think this carrier will be an awesome option for my mum with CP I am seeing this week.

There are four main areas to focus on with safety in slings.

๐Ÿ”ต Breathing

๐Ÿ”ต Sleeping

๐Ÿ”ต Feeding

๐Ÿ”ต Clothing

You can read more here and download the leaflet (free) at the link in the comments (itโ€™s also visible from my website homepage in the sling safety section. I believe that websites/manufacturers that truly take safety and wellbeing seriously will have a link to good safety info visible on their landing pages without multiple clicks).

This will be incorporated into a refresh of my Carry Well and Carry Safe leaflet in time, and we will add packs of this infographic as a postcard/flyer to the website soon.
