Komako Peonies Cottage Garden Accommodation

Komako Peonies Cottage Garden Accommodation Komako Peonies Cottage Garden Accommodation is nestled amongst the serene gardens of Idylwild "Ideal Setting in Large Paddock". But what to do with them?

It is situated between Ranfurly and Waipiata and is just 10 metres from the world famous Otago Central Rail Trail. In the early 1990's when Komako Peonies and Cottage Garden hosts Heather Gilchrist and Grant Pullar purchased their 10 acre lifestyle block -- historically known as Idylwild -- bordering the Otago Central Railway line on the outskirts of the tiny Waipiata settlement, they loved the 19

16 homestead but were absolutely smitten by a former owner's eclectic collection of outbuildings. As they pondered various options, Heather and Grant developed a peonies plantation and created a magical garden. With the closure of the railway line and opening of the Otago Central Rail Trail in 2000 the future of the outbuildings became patently obvious --- convert them into accommodation. Grant's carpentry skills and Heather's eye for furniture and furnishings transformed the outbuildings into imaginative, private and very comfortable double and twin accommodation. Part of the homestead was blocked off to make way for a fully equipped guest kitchen and guest bathroom and laundry. What was a coal shed is now a very private, modern toilet block. For guests wishing to self-cater food can be organised or by prior arrangement meals prepared. A continental breakfast is provided. Of course, this being southern hospitality, it's only to be expected that yummy treats await guests on arrival. About the name Komako. Its Maori meaning is 'bellbird', an olive green songbird that like the kiwi is native to New Zealand. In November 1897 the name was changed to Waipiata, which translates to clear or shining water.
