At our meeting last night, we had the pleasure of hearing from Donna Dentice, Peter Cullen, and students Miro Ireson from Wellington High School and Brynn Pierce from Newlands College about the Strengthening Democracy programme - one of the fantastic projects we proudly support in the Wellington region.
Strengthening Democracy encourages young people to think critically about democracy, the challenges facing it, and how they can actively participate in New Zealand’s democratic processes. This year, Miro and Brynn shared how they had been exploring and reviewing New Zealand’s MMP voting system, introduced in 1996.
It was inspiring to hear how around 70% of Wellington region schools are now involved in the programme, and to hear firsthand from Miro and Brynn about the impact it has had on them personally.
Some of the highlights they spoke about included hearing from and working alongside MPs from different political parties around the table, being exposed to influential leaders, and seeing democracy in action firsthand. Miro and Brynn also shared how this week’s workshop included a session from the Polish Ambassador, Patryk Michał Błaszczak - an enlightening experience for everyone involved.
The biggest message from them was simple - Keep supporting the programme and keep encouraging schools to get involved, because it is such a unique and valuable opportunity for young people.
A huge thank you to Donna, Peter, Miro, and Brynn for joining us and speaking so passionately about the programme and the impact it is having on students across our region.
