My marketing plan advised me to introduce myself. I am camera shy … but here I am doing what I like doing…getting outside and seeing new things on foot. I am your host at Gem BnB. Discover the Best of Both Worlds: Why Stay in the Country When Visiting Christchurch?

When planning a visit to Christchurch, it’s easy to assume that staying in a city hotel is the most convenient option. But what if you could enjoy the best of both worlds — the excitement and attractions of Christchurch, combined with the peace, charm and hospitality of a rural country stay?

At Gem Bed and Breakfast, we believe that where you stay is just as much a part of your travel experience as the places you visit. Choosing a rural bed and breakfast over a traditional city hotel offers a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature and experience a little more of what makes Canterbury so special.

A Peaceful Escape from the City

Christchurch is a wonderful city, with its beautiful gardens, vibrant cafĆ© culture, shopping, museums and rich history. But after a busy day exploring, there’s something truly special about returning to the tranquillity of the countryside.

Imagine waking up to birdsong rather than city traffic, enjoying fresh country air and starting your morning at a gentler pace. Rural accommodation offers a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle, giving you space to relax and recharge before another day of adventures.

Whether you’re visiting Christchurch for a holiday, a special occasion or a few days away, a country stay can make your trip feel less rushed and far more restorative.

Experience Genuine Kiwi Hospitality

One of the greatest pleasures of staying at a bed and breakfast is the personal touch.

Unlike larger hotels, where accommodation can sometimes feel impersonal, a bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience warm, welcoming hospitality and a more individual approach to your stay.

At Gem Bed and Breakfast, the focus is on creating a comfortable and memorable experience, where guests can feel at home while discovering a new destination. It’s an opportunity to enjoy a more relaxed style of accommodation and perhaps even pick up a few local tips about places to visit, hidden gems to discover and the best ways to experience Canterbury.

Sometimes, it’s these little personal touches that turn a good holiday into a great one.

A Taste of the Canterbury Countryside

Canterbury has so much more to offer than its city centre. The surrounding countryside showcases the region’s wide-open landscapes, rural character and beautiful scenery.

Staying rurally allows you to appreciate this side of the region, with a different perspective from the usual city accommodation experience. Depending on the season, you may enjoy green pastures, expansive skies, fresh morning air and the peaceful rhythm of country life.

For visitors travelling from overseas or from other parts of New Zealand, it’s a wonderful opportunity to experience a slice of rural Canterbury rather than simply passing through on the way to the next attraction.

And for those who already know Christchurch, a country stay can reveal a quieter, more relaxing side of a familiar destination.

Close Enough to Explore Christchurch

Choosing rural accommodation doesn’t mean missing out on the city.

Christchurch offers plenty to fill your days, from strolling through the Botanic Gardens and exploring the city’s cultural attractions to enjoying the restaurants, cafĆ©s and shops. It’s also an excellent base for discovering more of Canterbury and planning day trips to the surrounding region.

By staying in the countryside, you can spend your days exploring and your evenings unwinding away from the busier city environment.

The key is finding accommodation that suits your itinerary. For travellers who have a car and enjoy a little flexibility, a rural bed and breakfast can be an appealing alternative to staying in the city centre.

You can enjoy the attractions that brought you to Christchurch while making your accommodation part of the overall experience.

More Than Just a Place to Sleep

A hotel room is often somewhere to return to at the end of the day. A rural bed and breakfast can be something more.

It’s a chance to enjoy a slower pace, appreciate your surroundings and create memories beyond the usual sightseeing itinerary. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, visiting family or simply looking for a change of scenery, the atmosphere of a country stay can add something special to your time away.

There’s no need to rush out the door first thing in the morning or feel as though every moment must be filled with activity. Sometimes, the most enjoyable part of a holiday is simply sitting back, enjoying the surroundings and having time to yourself.

A Different Kind of Value

When comparing accommodation, it’s worth looking beyond the nightly rate.

Consider the experience you want from your stay: a peaceful setting, personal hospitality, a comfortable place to unwind and the opportunity to experience the local region in a different way.

For many travellers, the real value lies in the combination of comfort, character and a more personal experience.

Make Gem Bed and Breakfast Part of Your Christchurch Experience

Your visit to Christchurch doesn’t have to mean choosing between the city and the country.

At Gem Bed and Breakfast, you can consider a different approach to your stay — one that gives you the opportunity to explore Christchurch while enjoying the appeal of a rural setting.

If you love the idea of fresh country air, a welcoming atmosphere and a peaceful place to return to after a day of sightseeing, a rural bed and breakfast could be just what you’re looking for.

So, when planning your next visit to Christchurch, why not look beyond the traditional hotel option? Discover the charm of staying rurally and enjoy a little more breathing space during your Canterbury adventure.

How Gem bed and breakfast began,

Every place has a story, and so do the people who bring it to life.

For years, I dreamed of moving to the South Island and opening a bed and breakfast. I had visited Christchurch with my daughter, where we walked the Port Hills, soaking in the stunning views of the Southern Alps. I knew this was the place to build my bed and breakfast—a place where I could hike, ski, and immerse myself in nature. The dream was clear, the plans made, and a new chapter ready to unfold.

But life had different plans.

I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. I didn’t call it that at first—I felt fit and well—but something was found that threatened my health unless treated. Instead of moving south, I stayed put to begin treatment. It was a long, hard journey, but I never let go of my dream. While sitting in treatment, I would plan what I would do once the treatment ended. I chose to focus on living—one step at a time.

After the COVID lockdowns, when I was finally able to move, more obstacles arose. Yet, giving up was never an option. With New Zealand’s borders closed, in hindsight, it was the perfect time to explore local hiking trails. My daughters and I tackled the Greenstone and Routeburn Tracks back to back—an incredible experience filled with excellent weather and like-minded companions.

Today, every guest who walks through my door is met with genuine understanding and compassion, because I know everyone carries their own story. Some are celebrating, others healing, and some simply need a place to breathe. Nestled in a rural setting, my property is often praised for its sense of space and tranquility. I invite visitors to live like locals—to unwind from their travels, their busy lives, and truly immerse themselves in the calm of New Zealand.

Opening my bed and breakfast wasn’t just the fulfilment of a dream—it was proof that difficult chapters don’t have to be the end of the story. Sometimes, they are just the beginning of a new one. It’s about refusing to let life’s setbacks steal your dreams.

Gem Bed and Breakfast is a place you’ll remember for its warmth, kindness, local insight, and relaxed atmosphere—a perfect starting point for your own New Zealand adventure.
