Reminder:

We’re proposing to remove two side tracks in the wider Mautohe Cathedral Cove area so we can focus on maintaining the main visitor experience. These smaller tracks are often damaged by weather, and it isn’t practical or sustainable to keep repairing them.

Have your say, feedback closes 5pm, 19 June.

A celebration yesterday for six district councils, including Hauraki, as they collectively moved towards delivering water and wastewater services from July 1. Waikato Waters is a council-controlled organisation jointly owned by Hauraki, Matamata Piako, Ōtorohanga, South Waikato, Waipā and Waitomo district councils. The organisation will serve around 170,000 people across communities stretching from Marokopa to Whiritoa. Hauraki Mayor Toby Adams said the six councils made a deliberate choice to work together on water services because we can achieve more collectively than individually. Waikato Waters will manage more than $1.4 billion in assets and deliver a long-term investment programme exceeding $3 billion.

Supported by a 290kWh battery the project is being listed as the country’s largest hybrid systems. In partnership with Sky Solar the company says the new advanced system will help power operations while reducing the environmental footprint.

NZ Civil Defence are testing the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system on Sunday 14 June, between 6-7pm ⚠️📲

If you have a hidden second phone for your safety, we recommend turning it off or putting it in flight mode for the duration of the test (6-7pm on Sunday 14 June) to ensure it’s not discovered when the nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert is sent.

Some mobile devices set to silent mode will still emit a sound when the Emergency Mobile Alert test is sent, so switching to flight mode or turning off your device is the only way to avoid the loud sound of the alert.

You can find more information about the Emergency Mobile Alert system, including a factsheet and list of FAQs at 🚨 https://getready.govt.nz/en/prepared/ema

Extra time was required by Thames Coromandel District Councillors yesterday as they considered potential cost cutting to keep rate increases down. Justin Tuburan reports.
After months of public consultation, Council yesterday decided not to go through with all the proposed changes in its ‘tough choices for lower rates’ scheme. The proposed decrease in mowing and garden maintenance around the region will be scrapped, with some Councillors highlighting the region’s reliance on tourism appeal and one calling it “political suicide” in light of the negative feedback. The Refuse and Recycling Transfer Stations at Coromandel, Matarangi, and Pauanui will remain open seven days a week, however with reduced hours closing at three pm. The increase on fees by an average thirteen percent was also approved by council with higher increases for cemetery and harbour services, as well as the removal of some rates remissions for excess water consumption and late penalty fees. Council also signed off on its accord with its five community boards yesterday after seven months of discussion. The accord promises to empower local decision making and promote active engagement with communities.

The bulk of the repair work on SH25 across the top of Pumpkin Hill will be completed early next month. A NZTA spokesperson yesterday told CFM that four of the eight repair sites were now complete north of Tairua. The work is being done using lane closures and stop/go, with the length of the site being progressively reduced. Repairs are required on one additional site, this work will finish around mid-June.

Three sell-out Pink Ribbon Fund-raising events for Breast Cancer at Pauanui has seen $15,000 raised for the cause. More than 240 people attended functions at the Grand Mercure Puka Park, the Pauanui Club and the Cabana Kitchen and Bar. Included was a pink ribbon raffle which reached its target of $5000.

Pepe Bridge — overnight closures begin tonight

Great to see the long-awaited replacement project finally making its mark on the ground. Works are now visibly underway, and from tonight motorists will start to feel the first impacts.

State Highway 25 at the Pepe Bridge will close overnight from 7pm to 6am on these nights:

• Tuesday 12 May to Thursday 14 May
• Monday 18 May to Thursday 21 May

To keep traffic moving, the bridge will reopen for a 5-minute window on the hour at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, midnight, 2am and 4am (give or take 15 minutes either side), so vehicles can get across during the closure period.

The overnight works cover piling and shifting services on the existing bridge, setting things up for the main build of the new two-way bridge and pedestrian walkway, which kicks off in July.

If you’re heading through Tairua late at night on any of these dates, plan your run accordingly. NZTA has acknowledged the inconvenience and thanks everyone for their patience while this much-needed upgrade gets underway.
