Well, since shooting this video I've had to make the decision not to continue with the project at this time. There were quite a few reasons why I made the call, but the most important was that I couldn't get the financial model to make sense.
What has been fantastic has been the opportunity to spend time in that beautiful space, destress and reset my "headspace and timing". It's also allowed me to learn a lot from some real experts about various things such as some of the biology of the area and the various multiple factors that influence architecture and other things in the tropics. I've done a deep dive into the only civilization which developed in the tropics, that of Bali, and how they learnt lessons about all sorts of things that allowed them to up their population density enough to create the specialisation that is a prerequisite for civilization.
I developed a prototype concept for tiny houses, clustered with community spaces and built with sustainable practices such as renewable materials which I believe is the right model for me in Panama, just that I need to find my own space to build so I have autonomous rights to develop and run the hostel to match my mental model and dream.
I'm unsure of the specifics right now, but the likelihood is that I'll have to go and "kick some doors" again to gather the necessary seed capital and to cover the OPEX during the construction and startup phases. I'm pretty excited about that.
I've also had the time and opportunity to discuss the project with a wide variety of people, where I could bounce my vision off them in exchange for honest critical thinking. This has included notably an Eco-engineer, a micro-biologist, a chemical engineer and a variety of other exceptionally bright and interesting people. This has helped me shape my sometimes inchoate thoughts to allow me to achieve the dream but doing so in a pragmatic way.
Some of these things include the creation and use of bio-char and bio-fuels, humanure, black soldier flies as a source of both protein and natural insect and bug control and various other things.
Oh Well, "a luta continua".
