At night the jungle doesn't reveal itself — you listen for it.
We head onto the river, cut the engine, and let the dark do the talking: frogs, distant calls, a sky with no city light. Don Oscar reads the river in total darkness like it's daytime.

Some mornings you don't go looking for the jungle — it's already outside your door.

The great egret stands motionless in the shallows, a tall white heron that hunts by patience: it waits, then strikes for fish in a single fast motion. Found throughout the Amazon's flooded forests and riverbanks.

The yellow-headed caracara watches from the railing — a cream-headed member of the falcon family, but curious and opportunistic by nature, often seen perched near clearings and unbothered by people.

This is what waking up on the Río Yanayacu looks like: deep in the Peruvian Amazon, where the forest reaches right up to the lodge. Don Oscar picks you up in Iquitos and brings you here himself — the rest, the forest takes care of.

Hay mañanas en que no sales a buscar la selva: ya está afuera de tu puerta.

La garza blanca se queda inmóvil en la orilla, una garza alta que caza con pura paciencia: espera, y ataca al pez en un solo movimiento rápido. Vive en toda la Amazonía, en riberas y bosques inundados.

El caracara cabeciamarillo observa desde la baranda — un ave de la familia de los halcones, de cabeza crema, curiosa y oportunista, que suele posarse cerca de los claros sin espantarse de la gente.

Así amanece a orillas del Río Yanayacu, en plena Amazonía peruana, donde el bosque llega hasta el lodge. Don Oscar te recoge en Iquitos y te trae hasta acá él mismo — lo demás lo pone la selva.

🐒 Los escuchas mucho antes de verlos.

Su aullido viaja kilómetros entre los árboles: el mono aullador rojo tiene un hueso especial en la garganta que amplifica el sonido, y es uno de los animales más ruidosos de toda la Amazonía.
