SANTOL AGAINST CANCER🧬
A compound isolated from santol bark caused human colon-cancer cells to undergo programmed death in laboratory studies.
Known as koetjapic acid, the plant-derived compound was tested on HCT 116 colorectal-cancer cells. Researchers found that it triggered apoptosis, a controlled process that removes damaged or abnormal cells before they continue multiplying.
After treatment, the cancer cells showed clear signs of cellular breakdown. Their DNA fragmented, their nuclei changed shape, and the internal structures responsible for energy production lost their normal function.
Koetjapic acid showed potential, but its poor solubility in water made it difficult to develop further. Researchers later created a more soluble derivative called potassium koetjapate, which also reduced the survival and growth of colorectal-cancer cells in laboratory experiments.
A 2024 study tested the derivative in mice carrying human colon-cancer tumors. The treatment slowed tumor growth, providing early animal-model evidence that supported the earlier findings from cultured cells.
The research focused on purified compounds isolated or developed from santol stem bark. It does not show that eating santol fruit can prevent or treat colorectal cancer.
Koetjapic acid and its derivative remain experimental, but the findings show why scientists continue examining familiar plants for molecules that may eventually contribute to new cancer treatments.
