The name Bacolod was derived from the Ilonggo word "bakolod" meaning "stonehill" as the original settlement was founded in 1770 on a stonehill area, somewhere on what is now Brgy. However, due to frequent Muslin raids in 1787, most of the settlement of Bacolod transferred towards the shoreline. The old site was then called "Da-an Banwa," meaning old town, and Bacolod grew to the city it is now.
