The iconic Burnham Lake is set to reopen on September 1, Baguio Day, with the city government aiming to restore one of the Summer Capital's most popular attractions alongside improved safety standards and upgraded facilities.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong, July 27, said the lake's water level has reached about 50 percent and expressed hope that additional rainfall from incoming weather disturbances would help replenish it before reopening.

"We're targeting the reopening in September, during Baguio Day. The water level is now at around 50 percent. Hopefully, we'll get enough rain to raise the water level," he said.

The mayor also confirmed that new imported boats have already arrived in Manila and will replace the aging fleet previously used on the lake.

"I will no longer accept the old boats. We'll dispose of them. It's like buying a new pair of shoesβ€”you also need new socks. We want visitors to enjoy the lake, so everything has to be in good condition, and the watercraft must be safe," he explained.

Magalong stressed that ensuring public safety remains the city's top priority and said concessionaires operating at the lake are expected to comply with the local government's directives.

"They have no choice but to cooperate and collaborate," he said. "The local government has the final say on this. This is not for me; this is for the safety of the people of Baguio."

The mayor clarified that while some relatively new boats may still be allowed to operate after inspection and necessary repairs, older vessels will no longer be permitted regardless of appeals from operators.

"There are boats that were still relatively new before operations were suspended, and these were certified by the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) as still being in good condition. Those are acceptable after repairs," Magalong explained. "But the old boats that everyone in Baguio knows are already worn out will not be allowed back. Even if operators insist or appeal, I have already issued the guidelines, and they should simply comply."

Magalong added that concessionaires would continue to benefit from the business despite the stricter standards, noting that the city government is not trying to disrupt their livelihood but instead seeks to improve operations and maintain a cooperative relationship.

"They will still earn from their business. They've been operating there for a long time, and we're not taking that away from them. We simply want them to cooperate so we can maintain a good working relationship with the local government," he said.

Regarding the appearance of the replacement boats, the mayor said visitors can expect a variety of attractive new designs.

"There will be many designs, and they're all beautiful," the mayor assured.-Gaby B. Keith
