The local government authorized the temporary closure of Session Road from vehicular traffic on April 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2026 from 4 am to 7 pm in line with the Summer in Baguio 2026 celebration and the National Literature Month.
Under Executive Order No. 42, series of 2026 signed by Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong, the City Tourism, Culture and Arts Office shall serve as the coordinator of the said endeavor while the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) must come up and implement a security and traffic management plan to reduce the road closure impact on the public.
Further, the City Engineering Office (CEO) will provide the manpower, equipment and devices for the closure of roads and re-routing of traffic while the City Treasury Office should extend support to the organizers by conducting the assessment and collection of fees from participating merchants.
Further, the Permits and Licensing Division shall extend support to the organizers by issuing special permits to participating merchants upon payment of pertinent fees while the City Public Information office shall cause the widest dissemination of the aforesaid order.
Last year, the period March to May contributed some 316,390 tourist arrivals in the city or nearly one third of the total number of tourists that arrived in the country’s Summer Capital.
Earlier, Session Road was recognized as a tourist destination due to the diverse array of activities showcased during the Sunday pedestrianization of the city’s main thoroughfare during the Baguio Tourism Congress held last January 12, 2024.
Subsequently, the local government lined up various activities that residents and tourists alike can enjoy, such as culture, arts and heritage: wellness and recreation; religious and civic commemorations; and sports and leisure competitions during the months of March, April and May.
Among the activities scheduled during the said period is the celebration of the National Literature Month as mandated under Proclamation NO. 968, series of 2015.
Moreover, Session Road, as a prominent and central location in the city, provides a suitable and accessible venue for hosting some of the Summer Vacation in Baguio 2026 activities that will run from April 1 to May 31, 2026.
The mayor said that the celebration of the Summer Vacation in Baguio is regarded as a fiesta celebration as earlier cited, thus, the need to close the said road on the said dates to ensure the maximum participation of the public in the lined-up events. - By Dexter A. see
