HOW TO SAY I LOVE YOU TOO IN NABALOI LANGUAGE?

The Ibaloi are one of the major Indigenous ethnolinguistic groups of the Cordillera Administrative Region in Northern Luzon, Philippines. They are the original inhabitants of the southern part of Benguet, particularly the areas of Baguio City, Tuba, Itogon, Sablan, Tublay, Kabayan, Bokod, and Atok.

The name Ibaloi is believed to have come from the words i- (people of) and baloi (house), which means "people who live in houses." Their language, Ibaloi, belongs to the Northern Luzon branch of Austronesian languages and continues to be spoken alongside Ilocano and Filipino.

For centuries, the Ibaloi have been known for their rich traditions, agriculture, and deep respect for nature. They cultivated rice terraces, raised vegetables and livestock, and practiced sustainable farming long before modern agriculture reached the highlands. Gold mining was also a significant part of their history, with Ibaloi ancestors already extracting and trading gold even before the arrival of Spanish colonizers.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Ibaloi culture is the tradition of mummification, particularly practiced in Kabayan. Through a unique preservation process using herbs, smoke, and natural methods, respected elders and leaders were transformed into what are now known as the Kabayan Fire Mummies, reflecting the tribe's belief in honoring their ancestors and preparing them for the afterlife.

Community cooperation is a cornerstone of Ibaloi society. Families and neighbors traditionally help one another during farming, house construction, weddings, and other important occasions, strengthening unity and preserving the spirit of mutual support.

The Ibaloi are also recognized for their vibrant cultural heritage. Traditional clothing is woven with colorful patterns and often paired with heirloom beads and brass ornaments. Their music features instruments such as the kalsa (gongs), while dances are performed during celebrations, rituals, and thanksgiving ceremonies. Oral traditions, songs, and stories continue to preserve their history and identity across generations.

Today, the Ibaloi remain proud stewards of their ancestral lands and culture. While embracing education, tourism, and modern livelihoods, they continue to protect their traditions, sacred sites, language, and customs. Their enduring resilience and strong connection to the land have made them an important part of the rich cultural tapestry of the Cordillera and the Philippines.
