"PIKPIK", "PIKPIKEM"
Mayat to agsabaw ti Pinikpikan tatta nga panagpupuwek.

No matter how you say it and spell it, in Kankanaey it all comes down to one thing - beating.

The famous Cordilleran dish Pinikpikan comes from the root word "pikpik," which means to beat lightly. That's how the chicken is traditionally prepared before cooking.

But don't confuse it with "pakpak." That's a whole different level! It means to beat hard, the kind of word you might hear from an angry guy in Itogon holding a naba (stone) saying, "Pakpaken nika man!" In English, that's basically, "I'm going to give you a good beating!"

So remember: pikpik is for the chicken, pakpak is your warning to run.

BAGYO VS BAGUIO

The Filipino word "BAGYO" (typhoon) did not originate from the word "Baguio"

The Vocabulario de la lengua tagala (written in 1613 and published in 1754) already defines bagyรณ (with stress on the second syllable) to mean a strong storm or typhoon.

This proves the word existed well before the record-breaking downpour in Baguio in 1911 According to Wiktionary and comparative linguistic research, bagyo is inherited from Protoโ€‘Austronesian baRiuS, meaning โ€œtyphoon.โ€

It has cognates across Philippine languages such as Amis faliyos, Babuza bayus, Chamorro pakyo, and Ilocano bagioโ€”not related to any place named Baguio The city name Baguio actually comes from the Ibaloi word bagiw, which means moss. The Spanish colonizers adapted it into Baguio.

It has nothing to do with storms or typhoons The exceptionally heavy rainfall in Baguio during July 1911 led some (mostly nonโ€‘linguists) to claim that the term bagyo came from that event. However, this view ignores both the documented earlier use of the term and its broader Austronesian origins
