With a noticeable drop in tourist arrivals, the city government is encouraging visitors to take advantage of the lighter traffic and more relaxed atmosphere in the country’s summer capital.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the current situation offers a rare opportunity for tourists to enjoy Baguio City without the usual congestion, especially during peak travel periods like the summer.

“Now is the right time for you to come up to the city of Baguio dahil expect na talagang maluwag ang trapiko natin,” the mayor said in a series of interviews, noting that the decline in visitor numbers has eased traffic conditions across the city.

Known for its cool climate, scenic views, and vibrant culture, Baguio typically experiences heavy influxes of tourists that often result in long travel times and crowded attractions. However, the current dip in arrivals has led to smoother traffic flow and shorter queues in popular destinations.

The mayor expressed hope that more visitors can come up to rediscover the charm of Baguio in a more serene and comfortable setting.

Local businesses, particularly those in the tourism and service sectors, are also expected to benefit if more visitors take advantage of the less crowded conditions.

The mayor assured the public that the city remains ready to welcome guests, with efforts in place to maintain safety, cleanliness and a pleasant experience for all.

"As Baguio faces economic challenges brought by reduced tourist arrivals, we remain optimistic that travelers can help support local enterprises while having a more enjoyable and stress-free visit," he said. - Aileen P. Refuerzo

Mayor Benjamin Magalong has ordered the temporary suspension of the city’s number coding scheme from April 8 to April 24, 2026, to address transportation difficulties caused by rising fuel prices.

The directive, issued through Executive Order No. 45, Series of 2026, temporarily halts the implementation of Ordinance No. 001, Series of 2003, also known as the Baguio City Number Coding Scheme.

The mayor cited provisions in the ordinance that allow the suspension of the scheme during extraordinary circumstances such as natural calamities or public disturbance.

In the order, the mayor said the increase in fuel costs has forced many public utility drivers to reduce or stop operations. This has resulted in fewer available rides and has caused inconvenience to commuters traveling to work, school and other essential destinations.

The mayor said the suspension is an interim measure to help ease mobility for residents while the city studies its impact on traffic conditions.

The city government will monitor traffic flow and commuter conditions during the suspension period to determine whether the measure improves public transportation or worsens congestion.

Lifting the ordinance is seen to alleviate the public transport dilemma in such a way that it will provide additional available transportation from the private sector.

As such, private car owners are also encouraged to observe car pooling and other helpful practices that can help augment the transport needs, the mayor said. - Aileen P. Refuerzo
