The Baguio Water District (BWD) urged consumers to conserve water with or without the El Niño phenomenon to help protect the environment.

BWD General Manager Engr. Salvador M. Royeca said the primary purpose of conserving water is to reduce water consumption, which translates to lower water bills amid the serious impact of the global oil shock on the prices of goods and services, including power, which is mainly used in producing potable water from existing sources.

He added that conserving water also greatly helps protect the environment because the less energy needed to produce water, the lower the demand for energy. This, in turn, results in a significant reduction in the production of fossil fuel-dependent energy and lessens its impact on the environment.

The BWD official noted that conservation efforts are both an individual and collective responsibility of consumers. Thus, everyone must strive to conserve water, especially during the summer months when there is a noticeable decline in supply from existing water sources, particularly deep wells, springs, and other open sources located in different parts of the city and nearby communities.

According to him, the BWD continues to implement measures to ensure sufficient potable water supply for consumers during their respective schedules.

Royeca explained that the Sto. Tomas and Busol rain catchment basins serve as alternative water sources whenever existing sources cannot support the requirements of certain areas, particularly highly elevated communities.

He acknowledged that some areas in the city, especially highly elevated places, are already experiencing a decline in water supply. However, he assured the public that remedial measures have been put in place to ensure that consumers in these areas continue to receive water during their scheduled supply while efforts are ongoing to identify additional workable solutions to address the difficult situation during the dry months.
