Online booking platforms have become a popular gateway for travelers seeking accommodations in the Summer Capital, whether for leisure, education, or work. With just a few clicks, they can easily reserve transient houses and other lodging options in the city.
However, City Tourism Office (CTO) head Aloysius Mapalo warned that the growing popularity of online booking platforms has also opened opportunities for fraudulent operators.
He disclosed that in recent years, some tourists have fallen victim to fake listings and illegitimate accommodation providers, resulting in financial losses and disappointing experiences upon arrival.
To address this concern, the city government under Mayor Benjamin Magalong has taken proactive measures to protect tourists and preserve the city’s reputation for hospitality and safety.
One initiative is the establishment of 24/7 tourist assistance hotlines integrated with the Baguio Visita portal, allowing visitors to verify the legitimacy of accommodation listings in real time.
Mapalo urged travelers to check whether a transient house or lodging establishment is included in the city’s official database of registered businesses. If a listing cannot be verified through official channels, tourists are strongly advised to avoid making reservations or payments.
City officials stressed that protecting Baguio’s tourism industry is a shared responsibility that requires vigilance from both authorities and visitors.
