MOONSET OVER KANLAON
Single Shot
April 3, 2026

This is one of those photographs where everything needs to fall into place to even have a chance of capturing it.

The biggest factor was the weather. Clear skies around Kanlaon are never guaranteed, and clouds are almost always present near the peak. At one point, it looked like this attempt would end like many before it. I was close to packing up, but at just the right moment, the clouds opened enough to reveal the scene, allowing me to capture the moon as if it were being slowly devoured by the volcano.

Timing was just as critical. This had to be taken just before dawn to retain detail in the landscape while keeping the moonโ€™s brightness under control. Shooting too early or too late would have thrown off the balance entirely.

Positioning also played a key role. Using PhotoPills, I mapped out the alignment in advance, and it proved to be very accurate. I was shooting from around 15 km away from the crater. Moving farther back could have made the moon appear larger, but it also increases the risk of atmospheric haze and morning fog, which is common in this area.

In the end, this image almost didnโ€™t happen. But sometimes, it comes down to trusting your instincts and waiting just a little longer.

Camera used: Fujifilm Philippines XT5+ XF 150-600 Lens
