T Y P H O O N • O D E T T E • 2 0 2 1 🌀
As most of you are probably aware by now, the 16th of December saw parts of Philippines devastated by category 5, Super Typhoon Rai (Odette).
Unfortunately for us and the Siargao community, we experienced the full force of her straight on the head, as she made a direct hit around 2pm that afternoon.
90% of the island homes and businesses are subject to severe damage, most without a dry roof left over their head. As if this wasn’t enough, to add insult to injury, the northeast monsoon season is upon us, with a good 3 months of heavy rains ahead.
WHAT WE AIM TO ACHIEVE
- Our construction team are currently finishing off temporary roofing at our Hygge Homestay, using anything we can get our hands on. Salvaging debris such as plywood, corrugated tin and tarpaulin, anything that will keep the rain out. Once finished, these dry, warm spaces are open to anyone in need of shelter.
- Setup and/or join a supply chain of simple construction materials, such as plywood, nails, corrugated tin etc to be able to construct a more permanent roof and structure.
- Rebuild the homes of our team and staff. Many of their own houses were completely destroyed during the Typhoon, with some living in more remote and exposed parts of the island.
- Employ our team to use their skills in rebuilding the homes of our neighbours, Siargao community and anyone else in need at this desperate time.
WHAT WE NEED
- Much like the rest of the world, Covid 19 has barely seen businesses break even in the last 2 years, with a severe lack of employment for many. We need your help financially to get us back on our feet. All and any donations are greatly appreciated and any money raised will be used to pay for skilled, local labour, basic construction materials, logistics and anything else necessary to help us rebuild Siargao and put a roof back over people’s heads.
