May 15, 1565. Spaniards lead the first procession of the Sto. Niรฑo in Cebu.

Seventeen days after finding of the image, the Spaniards solemnly carry the Sto. Niรฑo on their shoulders in a procession from the shoreline (the image was kept in Legazpi's ship after it was found) to a temporary chapel set up in a bower of branches, with a covering of hay.

The principal church wherein it is today venerated is still being constructed.

"It was such the first procession in the islands".

The first fiesta of the Santo Niรฑo, therefore, can be said to have taken place on the 15th of May 1565.

It was historic for another reason. It marked the "reconciliation of Spaniards and Cebuanos" and thus pointed the way to three centuries of Spanish rule that followed.

It is said that on the day of the feast, some thirty Cebuanos, who had come to ask Legazpi for the return of the image, were allowed to observe the ceremonies and that they were "struck with awe" at the reverence the Spaniards accorded the Sto. Niรฑo.

The Cebuanos earlier tried to ransom the image of the Holy Child with gold, saying that the image "is ours from time immemorial".

Cebuโ€™s rich precolonial past takes center stage this May as heritage advocates, cultural workers, students, and the public gather for an immersive night that reimagines the Visayas as a dynamic maritime force in Southeast Asia.

The free admission event โ€œ๐—–๐—ข๐—ก๐—ก๐—˜๐—–๐—ง๐—œ๐—ข๐—ก๐—ฆ: ๐—š๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ถ ๐˜€๐—ฎ ๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜€๐—ฎ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—บ ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฒโ€ will unfold on May 15, 2026, from 6:00 PM onwards at Palm Grass The Cebu Heritage Hotel as part of the hotelโ€™s continuing heritage celebration.

A key highlight of the evening is the talk ๐—˜๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—œ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฎ of Ateneo de Manila University, who will provide historical context on the regionโ€™s naval strength, trade systems, and cultural exchanges.

Isorenaโ€™s discussion anchors the eveningโ€™s exploration of how early Visayans shaped regional networks through seafaring, warfare, raids, trade, and cultural connections across Southeast Asia.

Moving beyond static displays, the program invites participants to step into a living reconstruction of the ancient Visayan world โ€“ where seafaring communities once dominated regional trade routes through a combination of strategic raids (pangayaw), gold exchange, and deep spiritual traditions.

The event highlights how early Visayans were not merely passive participants in history but active shapers of a thriving maritime network that connected the archipelago to the wider Southeast Asian sphere.

The immersive experience features a dynamic lineup of heritage encounters. Guests can join live boat rowing demonstrations at the hotelโ€™s saltwater pool and explore a karakoa warship photobooth under โ€œThe Bakunawaโ€™s Wake.โ€ Cultural rituals such as Babaylan dance worship practices, ancestral hilot, and diwata traditions bring to life the spiritual dimensions of maritime journeys.

Performances of warrior dances, kulintang music, and traditional gongs will animate the rhythms of the archipelago.

The Filipino Traditional Blades group will showcase a curated exhibit on ancient weapons of the archipelago, while other displays illustrate maritime warfare, ancient physical intimacy practices, and ancestral burial customs. These exhibits will be complemented by interactive components, including a Binukot reenactment, puso-weaving workshops, and Asin Tibuok demonstrations alongside Southeast Asian culinary influences.

Further enriching the experience are participatory activities like a Pintados tattoo station, a communal tuba drinking contest, word games centered on ancient scripts, and late-night balak (poetry) exchanges by Litras Community.

The evening will also feature the awarding ceremony for the winners of the โ€œ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—น ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ผ: ๐—ช๐—ต๐˜† ๐—œโ€™๐—บ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—š๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ข๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜†โ€ Central Visayas-Wide Hybrid Speech Contest, a regional competition that gathered young speakers from across Central Visayas to reflect on patriotism, civic responsibility, and the continuing relevance of the heroes of Tres de Abril.

By weaving together scholarship, performance, and hands-on engagement, the program aims to deepen public understanding of how the Visayan ancestors navigated both the physical and cultural currents of their time โ€“ charting routes guided by stars, sustained by trade, and defined by both conflict and connection.

The event is open to the public. Interested participants may register through the official link: https://forms.gle/qkRx9a57t212ujQ49
