Cebuโs rich precolonial past takes center stage this May as heritage advocates, cultural workers, students, and the public gather for an immersive night that reimagines the Visayas as a dynamic maritime force in Southeast Asia.
The free admission event โ๐๐ข๐ก๐ก๐๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ก๐ฆ: ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ถ ๐๐ฎ ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฎ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐น๐บ ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒโ will unfold on May 15, 2026, from 6:00 PM onwards at Palm Grass The Cebu Heritage Hotel as part of the hotelโs continuing heritage celebration.
A key highlight of the evening is the talk ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฎ of Ateneo de Manila University, who will provide historical context on the regionโs naval strength, trade systems, and cultural exchanges.
Isorenaโs discussion anchors the eveningโs exploration of how early Visayans shaped regional networks through seafaring, warfare, raids, trade, and cultural connections across Southeast Asia.
Moving beyond static displays, the program invites participants to step into a living reconstruction of the ancient Visayan world โ where seafaring communities once dominated regional trade routes through a combination of strategic raids (pangayaw), gold exchange, and deep spiritual traditions.
The event highlights how early Visayans were not merely passive participants in history but active shapers of a thriving maritime network that connected the archipelago to the wider Southeast Asian sphere.
The immersive experience features a dynamic lineup of heritage encounters. Guests can join live boat rowing demonstrations at the hotelโs saltwater pool and explore a karakoa warship photobooth under โThe Bakunawaโs Wake.โ Cultural rituals such as Babaylan dance worship practices, ancestral hilot, and diwata traditions bring to life the spiritual dimensions of maritime journeys.
Performances of warrior dances, kulintang music, and traditional gongs will animate the rhythms of the archipelago.
The Filipino Traditional Blades group will showcase a curated exhibit on ancient weapons of the archipelago, while other displays illustrate maritime warfare, ancient physical intimacy practices, and ancestral burial customs. These exhibits will be complemented by interactive components, including a Binukot reenactment, puso-weaving workshops, and Asin Tibuok demonstrations alongside Southeast Asian culinary influences.
Further enriching the experience are participatory activities like a Pintados tattoo station, a communal tuba drinking contest, word games centered on ancient scripts, and late-night balak (poetry) exchanges by Litras Community.
The evening will also feature the awarding ceremony for the winners of the Central Visayas-Wide Hybrid Speech Contest, a regional competition that gathered young speakers from across Central Visayas to reflect on patriotism, civic responsibility, and the continuing relevance of the heroes of Tres de Abril.
By weaving together scholarship, performance, and hands-on engagement, the program aims to deepen public understanding of how the Visayan ancestors navigated both the physical and cultural currents of their time โ charting routes guided by stars, sustained by trade, and defined by both conflict and connection.
