Sitio Remedios is a private heritage village resort situated in an 18,000 square meter of land in Barangay Victoria, Currimao, Ilocos Norte. Facing the West Philippine Sea, the Sitio is a re-created Ilocano village typical of the mid-fifties. The houses and buildings are made of vintage bricks and wood salvaged from mid-century structures mostly from the towns of Ilocos Norte. The lay-out is in a grid typical of Spanish times, the quadricula, respectful of spaces and ancient trees, amid which the structures are built. The houses were constructed by workers from the towns where the houses were sourced, guided and coached without any detailed architectural plans but to surface their innate artistry and skill to build remembrances of their Ilocano past. The Sitio is dedicated to the patron saint of Currimao, St. Michael, the Archangel.
The balays are furnished with vintage Ilocano furniture – beds, dining tables, wooden sala sets, and the ubiquitous butaca plantation chairs with elongated armrests. Vintage lamp fixtures, authentic crocheted bedspreads and tablecloth, along with inabel sheets were also sourced to complete the traditional interiors and the typical Ilocano feel.
By choice, there are no television sets in the houses. However, cold and hot water showers, as well as air-conditioning units are installed at all the bedrooms for those who cannot go without modern comforts.
Plaza Manzanilla, the main plaza fronting the heart of the Sitio, Iglesia San Miguel and Currimao beach, is the focal space of the private resort. The entire plaza is paved with flat coral stones in irregular shapes sourced from the northern town of Pasuquin. Manzanilla bushes are planted around the plaza, along with “escarlatinas” (Ilocano variety of bougainvillea) and gumamelas. The Iglesia with its side altars honoring St. Anthony of Padua and Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, and the mid-century-inspired Balays surrounding its grounds, Plaza Manzanilla is an ideal venue for receptions and glamorous settings under a starry and moonlit sky.
