TURNING WASTE INTO SANITATION SOLUTIONS!

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Maasim, through the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) XII – PAMO-SBPS, successfully conducted the Turnover of Low-Cost Project Materials (EcoSeptic Project: Turning Waste into Sanitation Solutions) on October 6, 2025, at the Barangay Hall of Daliao, Maasim, Sarangani Province.

A total of 12 beneficiaries from Barangay Daliao received eco-friendly septic tank materials — including toilet bowls, cement, culverts made from shredded waste bottles, steel, and pipes.

The culverts used in this project are innovatively made from shredded plastic bottles and waste cellophane mixed with cement, creating a durable and cost-efficient precast tank. This process not only provides a sustainable sanitation solution but also helps divert plastic waste from the environment, transforming it into a useful resource for the community.

This initiative, led by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), headed by Mrs. Alejandra G. Sison, with the presence and support of the Municipal Sanitation Inspector, Mr. Inocencio Baque, and the Office of the Vice Mayor, represented by Mrs. Josephine Solidad, aims to promote proper sanitation while supporting solid waste reduction and recycling efforts.

The project supports Municipal Ordinance No. 02-006 (Comprehensive and Integrated Solid Waste Management) and Municipal Ordinance No. 15-13-004 (Zero Open Defecation).

International Coastal Clean-up 2025

Maasim, Sarangani Province- On Saturday, September 20, 2025, the Local Government Unit of Maasim, through the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), spearheaded the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) 2025 in line with the world’s largest volunteer effort to protect our ocean, beaches, and waterways.

The ICC is celebrated every third Saturday of September, an initiative that started with the Ocean Conservancy in 1986, now observed in more than 100 countries, including the Philippines. In the Philippines, the ICC celebration is institutionalized under Presidential Proclamation No. 470, series of 2003, declaring every third Saturday of September as International Coastal Clean-up Day. This aims to strengthen public awareness and encourage community participation in preserving and protecting our marine environment.

The day began with an energetic ZUMBA session at 5:30 a.m., led by the students of Colon National High School, which served as a warm-up and a unifying activity before the clean-up. Afterward, participants proceeded with the coastal clean-up along the shores of Barangay Colon and Poblacion, leading up to the Main Clean-up Activity.

A total of 294 kilograms of waste were collected during the clean-up, contributing to the global effort of reducing marine litter and protecting marine biodiversity.

This year’s ICC gathered 254 participants from various sectors and organizations, showcasing unity and commitment to protecting our marine and coastal resources.

🌊 MARINE LITTER BASELINE SURVEY – AT-SEA TRAWL SURVEYS

On July 29, 2025, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) XII – PAMO SBPS, in collaboration with DENR-CMEMP XII, LGU Maasim, and LGU Kiamba, successfully conducted Marine Litter Baseline – At-Sea Trawl Surveys in the coastal waters of Maasim using the trawling method.

This initiative, initiated by DENR XII – PAMO SBPS, aims to identify, quantify, and classify floating marine litter to better understand its sources, movement, and potential impacts on Sarangani Bay’s marine biodiversity. The results of this baseline study will serve as vital data to develop science-based strategies and targeted interventions for marine litter reduction and coastal protection.

Through this collaborative effort, we strengthen our shared commitment to sustainable coastal resource management, marine biodiversity conservation, and the vision of a cleaner, healthier Sarangani Bay for generations to come.

🌿International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem | July 26, 2025

In line with the global celebration of Mangrove Day, the LGU Maasim, through the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) spearheaded a Waste Declogging in the Mangrove Forest and Mangrove Planting Activity to raise awareness and promote the protection of our vital coastal ecosystems.

This effort was made possible through the active participation and collaboration of key partners: the Barangay Local Government Unit of Tinoto, the Philippine Coast Guard, the PNP Maritime Group, and the Asnalang 6 Fisherfolk Association. The activity was also supported by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Protected Area Management Office of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (DENR-PAMO SBPS).

Mangroves are more than just trees—they are our natural protectors, helping reduce storm impacts, serving as fish nurseries, and storing carbon to fight climate change.

Together, let’s continue to protect and restore our mangrove forests for a resilient and sustainable future.
