"Kaidan" (怪談) is a term in Japanese that refers to ghost stories or tales of the supernatural. These stories often involve ghosts, spirits, demons, or other supernatural entities. Kaidan stories have a long history in Japanese culture and literature, with some of the most famous ones originating from classical Japanese literature.

Kaidan stories are commonly told, especially during the summer season when traditional ghost story gatherings known as "hyakumonogatari kaidankai" (a gathering to tell one hundred supernatural tales) are held to invoke a spooky atmosphere. These tales are a significant part of Japanese folklore and continue to influence modern Japanese horror and popular culture.

DID YOU KNOW....

Japan is home to a treasure trove of ghost stories, or kaidan, many of which remain relatively obscure. What's intriguing is that a majority of these tales revolve around women.

In old Japan during sweltering summers, people sought solace from the oppressive heat by eagerly welcoming the night. Amidst the cacophony of frogs and insects during the Obon season, they engaged in the eerie tradition of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, known as "A Gathering of 100 Weird Tales."

To play, 100 candles encircled them, and participants recounted chilling stories, often rooted in their local folklore or personal experiences. Each tale's conclusion led to extinguishing a candle, amassing spiritual energy that transformed the room into a beacon for the supernatural. As the final light vanished, dread awaited in the darkness, its origins lost to history, likely devised as a samurai's courage test.
