One popular story says travelers had to climb steep mountain trails just to reach the town. Exhausted, they would sigh:
"๐—›๐—ฎ๐˜†... ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜†... ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜†..."

With the Tagalog prefix "ma-" meaning "many," the place became known as Majayjayโ€”the place of many sighs. While this is a traditional explanation rather than a proven fact, it has become one of the town's best-loved origin stories.
