With heavy hearts, the GSP mourns the passing of Mr. Alberto "Abet" Morillo, a respected geologist, dedicated professional, and valued member of the Philippine geology community. Mr. Morillo devoted his life to advancing the profession and mentoring those who followed. His integrity and unwavering commitment to service left a lasting mark on colleagues, friends, and the organizations he faithfully served.
Mr. Morillo served three terms as GSP President (1998, 2008, 2018). One of his lasting contributions to the profession came during his final term, when the Philippine Mineral Reporting Code Committee (PMRCC) was founded through the collaboration of the Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP), the Society of Metallurgical Engineers of the Philippines (SMEP), and the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers (PSEM).
The GSP joins his family, friends, and the Philippine geology community in celebrating his life and honoring his enduring legacy.

Abet belonged to a generation of petroleum geologists who came of age when oil exploration was still an adventure. He joined Basic Petroleum when Philippine oil exploration still carried a sense of national possibility – the belief that the next well might uncover a resource capable of reshaping the country's future. He spent more than three decades at Basic Petroleum, through booms, disappointments, and the long wait for the next discovery. His professional world was not only his workplace but also his community. His friends, colleagues, competitors, and mentors were oil men and exploration geologists. The language of prospects, seismic lines, drilling risks, and frontier basins shaped both his career and his social life.
His life was not measured by the discovery of a giant oil field or the creation of a global energy company. Instead, his legacy was something quieter, yet no less important: continuity. Through cycles of optimism and disappointment, shifting markets, and advancing technologies, Abet carried the institutional memory of the company from one era to the next. He became the company's living link to its origins, a reminder that today's renewable energy ambitions were built upon decades of geological exploration, technical discipline, and patient effort.
Neither Basic nor Abet ultimately arrived at the exact future they may once have imagined. Yet history is seldom defined by the fulfillment of every ambition. More often, it is found in endurance: the capacity to persist through adversity and remain standing through the passage of time. Few lives become so deeply entwined with the fortunes of a company that one comes to mirror the other. Basic and Abet matured together, faced trials together, and, in doing so, forged a shared legacy that neither could have written alone.
The true value of that relationship cannot be found in financial statements or corporate reports. It resides in something far more enduring: identity.
Over time, when people think of Basic Petroleum, many will think of Abet Morillo. And when they think of Abet Morillo, they will think of Basic Petroleum. Few individuals ever become so inseparable from the institution they serve. Fewer still leave behind a legacy in which personal dedication and corporate history are woven together so closely.
When all is said and done, that may be Abet's greatest achievement: not merely helping build a company, but becoming part of its history, its memory, and its dignity – a rarity few men ever achieve.
