Originally the area was called Dilao (yellow) and later San Fernando de Dilao as it soon became an enclave of a settlement of 350-400 Catholic expatriate Japanese, whose numbers swelled over the next two decades to around 3000. Having escaped much of the bombing and artillery damage that destroyed most of the city of Manila during the liberation battle of February 1945, Paco is home to the 19th-century Paco Park, Plaza Dilao, churches, and old homes on tree-lined streets.
