Interested in conducting botanical research? 🌿🔎✏️
Consider yourself lucky because we have 24 registered and active herbaria in the Philippines that you can visit to conduct specimen examinations! Each herbarium manages a unique collection of specimens representing different plant groups from various areas within and outside the country.
But what exactly is a herbarium?
A herbarium is like a library of preserved plant specimens and ancillary information, maintained to ensure the safety and accessibility of physical records of the world's plant diversity, including data on their morphological, genetic, physiological, behavioral, and ecological variations. These specimens are valuable resources for basic and applied plant research, as well as teaching students at all levels and educating the general public.
At present, the Philippine National Herbarium (PNH) holds more than 200,000 preserved plant specimens, making it the largest botanical collection in the country. The PNH also serves as the official custodian of holotype specimens for plant species first discovered in the Philippines. To ensure taxonomic reference collections for present and future generations, we encourage researchers to deposit their holotype specimens in the PNH and secure duplicates in other herbaria registered within or outside the Philippines.
