# 🚲 DID KATIPUNEROS USE BICYCLES TO HELP SPREAD THE REVOLUTION?

**Before the Philippine Revolution erupted in 1896, the bicycle may have helped members of the Katipunan move beyond Manila and recruit new supporters.**

According to Filipino historian **O.D. Corpuz** in *The Roots of the Filipino Nation*, the Katipunan was rapidly expanding in 1896. Its members used different methods to conceal their activities and spread their movement.

Then came a surprisingly modern tool:

**the newfangled bicycle.**

Corpuz wrote that Katipunan recruiters “took to” bicycles, **cycling and recruiting outside Manila**.

Think about that image.

Years before the first shots of the Philippine Revolution, bicycles—still relatively new in the Philippines—were reportedly being used by secret revolutionary recruiters moving from place to place.

The bicycle offered something walking could not:

**speed and mobility.**

A rider could travel farther without immediately attracting the attention that a large organized group might draw.

The story is especially fascinating because the Katipunan was operating in secrecy. By 1896, its members were recruiting, holding concealed meetings, distributing propaganda, and preparing for a possible uprising against Spanish colonial rule.

Bicycles were only one part of that larger effort.

But they remind us that the Philippine Revolution was also shaped by the technology of its time.

**Before motorcycles. Before automobiles. Before radios.**

There were already Filipinos using one of the newest forms of personal transportation to move through the countryside and help spread a revolutionary movement.

The claim about bicycle-riding Katipunan recruiters comes from Corpuz's historical account and is also repeated in an academic study of bicycles and modernity in the late Spanish Philippines. However, the surviving accounts do **not** clearly identify every cyclist or document the exact routes they traveled.

So we may never know their names.

But the image remains extraordinary:

**While the Katipunan was preparing to challenge an empire, some of its recruiters may have been doing part of that work on two wheels.**

The Philippine Revolution is usually remembered through **bolos, rifles, secret meetings, and the Cry of Revolution.**

But hidden somewhere in its story is another symbol of movement:

**a bicycle speeding down a Philippine road—carrying not just a rider, but perhaps the message of a revolution.**
