𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮’𝘀 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗲𝗰𝗼-𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲

From its usual beach, Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro also boasts a rich culture and eco-tourism destinations.

Nestled at the foot of Mt. Malasimbo, visitors can immerse themselves in the traditions of indigenous Iraya-Mangyan community at the Mangyan Village in Sitio Talipanan, Barangay Aninuan.

Established with support from the Ayala Foundation, the village serves as a cultural hub where tourists can appreciate the community's unique way of life and traditional craftsmanship.

Here, visitors can immerse and learn how Iraya-Mangyan artisans weave 'nito', a native forest vine, into intricate handicrafts such as baskets, fruit trays, placemats, and hand bags. This deep-rooted tradition remains the primary source of livelihood for the community.

The handcrafted items are available for purchase in the 'Barakahan' or village stalls from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, with prices ranging from 100 to 1,000 pesos depending on size and design.

Meanwhile, nature enthusiasts can explore the Puerto Galera Mangrove Conservation and Eco-Tourism Area in Barangay Tabinay.

This community-managed marine protected area spans 17.8 hectares, including a four-hectare mangrove site, and serves as home for 16 mangrove species, 6 seagrass species, 33 coral genera, and 173 reef fish species.

In 1977, Puerto Galera was officially recognized as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man and the Biosphere Reserve, a testament to the municipality's exceptional marine and terrestrial biodiversity.

🌱 ENGAGE. PLANT. GIVE. 🌱

Growing a Greener Puerto Galera, Giving Back to the Community
As we continue our celebration of World Tourism Month this September, the Municipal Tourism Office of Puerto Galera launches ENGAGE. PLANT. GIVE. — an environmental initiative that brings together the community in support of sustainable tourism, mangrove conservation, and education. 💚🌿

The project invites the participation of our local government employees and officials, LGU stakeholders, uniformed personnel, and other sectors of the Puerto Galera community to take part by purchasing mangrove propagules or seedlings for 100 pesos from the organizers on the date of the event on September 29 at the Muelle Cultural Heritage Park. Payments can be made online or onsite.

But this project is more than simply planting trees.

🌱 ENGAGE — Bring our community together for a shared environmental cause.
🌿 PLANT — Help protect and strengthen the mangrove ecosystem, particularly at the Muelle Cultural Heritage Park.
🎓 GIVE — Help provide educational support for Mangyan college students.

This is sustainable tourism in action, protecting our natural resources, empowering our communities, and creating opportunities for our people.

The Local Government Unit of Puerto Galera, under the leadership of Municipal Mayor Robinhood D. Ylagan and Municipal Vice Mayor Rocky D. Ilagan extends its gratitude to everyone who will participate and help make this initiative possible.
