Tiger Mantis Shrimp
𝘓𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦

Like other mantis shrimps, they possess some of the most advanced eyes in the animal kingdom, capable of seeing polarized light and up to 12-16 different wavelengths. They are solitary predators that live in deep, U-shaped burrows they excavate in sandy seafloors. They are ambush predators. As seen in your image, they wait at the entrance of their burrow with only their eyes and the top of their head visible, ready to strike passing prey with incredible speed up to 30 times faster than the blink of an eye.

Day Octopus
𝘖𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘢

It is a master of disguise, capable of instantly changing its skin color and texture to mimic surrounding coral rubble and sand. In this photo, it has raised fleshy bumps (papillae) over its mantle and arms to match the coarse seafloor. They are widely distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, making regular appearances in popular dive locations like Puerto Galera.

Swallowtail Headshield Slug
𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘢

This species is a predatory carnivore. It uses sensory bristles on its head to track and hunt small flatworms. They are widely distributed across the tropical Indo-West Pacific and Caribbean regions. They are typically encountered in shallow waters gliding over sandy bottoms, coral rubble, and seagrass beds.

Schooling Bannerfish
𝘏𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘱𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴

They have a deep, compressed, disc-shaped body. The primary coloration is white with two broad, diagonal black bands. Their most distinctive feature is the exceptionally long, white filament extending from the dorsal fin, which gives them their name. Their soft dorsal and caudal (tail) fins are a vibrant yellow, which helps them stand out against the reef.

Pinnate Spadefish
𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘹 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴

This juvenile stage is famous for its dramatic look—a jet-black, disc-shaped body outlined by a continuous, brilliant bright orange or yellow margin. They have exceptionally tall dorsal and a**l fins, giving them an elegant, wing-like silhouette. As they mature, they undergo a complete transformation. Their body becomes much thicker and changes to a silver-grey color with dark vertical bars, losing the vibrant orange outline and the exaggerated fin length.

Painted Spiny Lobster
𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳

Like all spiny lobsters, they lack the large front claws found on Maine lobsters. Instead, they rely on their thick, spiny shells and powerful tails for protection. It is distinguished by its striking coloration, featuring a dark blue-green to black base with bold white and yellow markings. Its legs are a solid, deep vibrant blue or purple. Unlike some other spiny lobster species, the painted spiny lobster does not participate in mass migrations and tends to stay within a relatively small home range.

Whip Coral Spider Crab
𝘟𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴

It has a long, pointed rostrum (snout) and a body covered in bumps and ridges that perfectly mimic the texture of the coral it inhabits. Its color usually matches its host, often appearing in shades of orange, red, or brownish-white with distinct banding on its legs. These crabs are masters of mimicry. Their body shape and color allow them to blend in seamlessly with the polyps of the whip coral, making them very difficult to spot for both predators and unsuspecting divers.

Clark's Anemonefish
𝘈𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘪

They have dark brown to black bodies with two broad white bands—one behind the head and one across the mid-body. Their most consistent feature is a yellow or white tail fin. They are sequential hermaphrodites; in a group, only the largest female and the second-largest male reproduce. : They can be highly defensive of their host. Some divers report individuals swimming over 15 feet from their anemone to chase away intruders.

Zebra Lionfish.
𝘋𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘻𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢

The zebra lionfish is a member of the Scorpaenidae family. As a "dwarf" species, it remains much smaller than the more famous red lionfish, typically reaching a maximum length of about 18 cm (7 inches). It is distinguished by its reddish-brown to dark brown vertical bars on a lighter body. A key feature is the fan-like pectoral fins, where the rays are connected by a membrane almost to the tips, unlike the long, free-standing rays of larger lionfish species.

Sixbar Angelfish
𝘗𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘹𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴

It is easily identified by its yellowish-tan body marked with five vertical black bars and a single white bar located just behind each eye. The entire body is often covered in dark blue polka-dots, while the tail and back portions of the a**l fin feature vibrant sapphire-blue spots and edging. They are commonly found throughout the Philippines, including dive sites like Anilao, Caban Island, and Palawan.
