🐠 DIVE SITE SPOTLIGHT — Bon Bon Reef 🌊

Site 20 on our dive map. Depth 8–25m. Open Water level — but a reef that consistently surprises photographers who know how to slow down. 🤿

Bon Bon Reef rewards patience. The shallows offer dense reef structure for nudibranchs, flatworms, and small crustaceans hiding in plain sight. Work deeper and the topography opens up: slopes, gorgonian fans, rubble zones where ambush predators sit and wait.

🔥 WHAT IS A BONFIRE DIVE?

It's 20:00. The banca anchors in open water. Lights drop into the darkness below.

Within minutes, the water column transforms. 🌊

Plankton rises from the deep. Larvae drift up — transparent, alien-looking, nothing like their adult forms. Juvenile fish appear like glass sculptures. Octopus and squid materialise from nowhere. And if you're lucky: pelagic nudibranch larvae, comb jellies, veliger shells, and creatures science is still catching up with.

A Bonfire Dive is blackwater diving done Filipino style — lights, fire, crew, community. You're not on a reef. There's nothing beneath you. Just open water and the entire water column rising to meet you. 🔬

🐴 SPECIES REVEAL — Denise's Pygmy Seahorse

Hippocampus denise. 13–24 mm. Gripping a gorgonian sea fan with a prehensile tail, coloured so precisely to match the coral polyps that most divers swim straight past — even when they're looking for it.

Named after underwater photographer Denise Nielsen Tackett and described by science only in 2003. Unlike its cousin Hippocampus bargibanti, H. denise can colonise multiple gorgonian genera and lives deeper — 13 to 90 metres. Our confirmed finds at Romblon come from 25m and below, on current-swept walls where the big fans grow.

At Sunset Cove, this animal carries Epic rarity status 🏆 — rare, prized, and worth every slow, methodical pass across the fan.

🐠 DIVE SITE SPOTLIGHT — Alad Sanctuary 🌊

Step off the banca, descend to 6 metres, and you're in one of Romblon's most protected and productive macro reefs. 🤿

Alad Sanctuary is a government-protected marine reserve — no fishing, no collecting, no pressure. Just a reef that's been left alone long enough to thrive. And it shows. 🌿

Depth: 6–15m. Open Water level. But don't let the shallow numbers fool you — this site punches way above its weight for macro photography. Protected reefs like this are where critters settle, where coral structure builds up, and where the patient photographer finds things that simply don't exist on disturbed sites.
