Ticao Island is known for one big reason: Manta Bowl Shoal.

Located in the Ticao-Burias Pass, the shoal is famous for its regular encounters with reef manta rays. The nutrient-rich waters attract plenty of marine life, while the currents bring mantas into the area to feed and visit cleaning stations.

For divers, the experience can be completely different from one dive to the next. You might see a single manta gliding quietly through the blue. On another day, several can appear at once, circling above the reef or moving effortlessly through the current.

And when they pass close enough for you to notice every detail, you quickly understand why divers keep coming back to Ticao.

If you ever spot several manta rays swimming one behind another, you might be witnessing one of the ocean's most fascinating courtship rituals.

This behavior is called a "mating train." A female manta ray leads the way while several males follow closely behind, matching her every turn and movement. The chase can last for hours or even days, testing each male's strength, endurance, and determination. Eventually, only one will earn the chance to mate.

It's like witnessing one of nature's most remarkable displays of courtship.
