A piece of Urbiztondo history from our family files.
Before Urbiztondo became known for surfing, tourism, cafés, and weekend crowds, this shoreline was already being protected by the families who lived here.

While organizing old documents, we found records from the 1970s showing how residents of Sabangan Beach/Urbiztondo came together to oppose sand extraction along the coast. The complaints were consolidated by Victoriana Fontanilla, with Rosario Antonio her daughter helping as her secretariat for the case and managing the filings.

The records describe the effects of beach mining in the area: erosion, saltwater intrusion into farms and water sources, damage to crops and private properties, and disturbance of the coastal ecology.

Through formal complaints, letters, photos, signatures, and persistence, the community brought the matter before government offices. By September 3, 1979, the Sangguniang Bayan of San Juan passed a resolution requesting the cancellation of the commercial sand permit in the interest of public safety.

For Urbiz Garden, this history matters.

This land is not just a place on the map. It is part of a shoreline that our elders fought to protect, long before conservation became a popular word and long before Urbiztondo became a destination.

We share this as a reminder that the beauty of this coast was not preserved by chance. It was protected by community effort, handwritten letters, old photographs, and people who cared enough to speak up.

From our family files to the next generation: may we continue to care for the shore that cared for us.
