CAMPING ETIQUETTE - It's all about manners and common sense (which seems to be in short supply these days). Camping is the hottest thing going right now. With so many new campers, there is a need to get everyone on the same page with proper etiquette. When you are camping, you have a temporary home and it should be treated as such.
BASIC CAMPING ETIQUETTE 101
1. FOLLOW CAMPGROUND RULES.
The first lesson in Camping Etiquette 101 is to always check and observe your campground rules. Each campground has its own set of rules and regulations that you must abide.
2. OBSERVE CHECK IN/OUT TIMES.
Campgrounds have specific check-in and check-out times. For your convenience, be aware of them before arriving. Some campgrounds do not allow check-ins after a certain time.
3. RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBORS.
Do not walk-through other campsites. This is a big campground no-no! Walk around them. It’s not polite to stroll through a camp that is already set-up. Keep all your things on your site, even if the site next to you appears to be empty. Being mindful of your neighbors is an all-encompassing etiquette guideline you should always consider. Just because you’re okay with something doesn’t mean your neighbors will be, too.
4. BE MINDFUL OF YOUR NOISE LEVEL.
Enjoy music at your site at a decent volume so other campers don’t have to hear it all day. Whether your go-to shower song is “Let It Go” or “Shake It Off”, these catchy tunes are meant for playing on incessant repeat…inside your head! Have fun, but also be aware that many people go camping to enjoy peace and quiet.
5. RESPECT QUIET HOURS.
Most campsites enforce quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Keep your voice and music low enough so that only your campsite can hear it. Be considerate and be mindful of those around you. Many campers like to sleep in, even if quiet hours end at 6:00 AM.
6. BE MINDFUL OF YOUR CAMPFIRE.
If you’re permitted to have a campfire, keep a close eye on it at all times and do not leave it unattended. When you leave or go to sleep, be sure that your fire is completely put out and no longer smoldering.
7. KEEP A TIDY CAMPSITE.
Clean up your site at the end of the night. Be sure all garbage and food gets cleaned up to avoid attracting wildlife.
8.KEEP CAMPGROUND FACILITIES CLEAN.
Do your part to keep these areas clean when using them by picking up after yourself and reporting any spills or broken equipment immediately.
9. BE MINDFUL OF YOUR PETS.
Most campgrounds enforce a strict leash policy. Be respectful of other campers by not allowing your dog to go off-leash.
10. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE.
If you see animals, don’t try to befriend them or scare them away. Take photos, but don’t interact with them. Keeping animals at a safe distance will help them maintain their natural patterns and behaviors, and they’ll keep returning to the campground for others to enjoy long after you’ve left.
11. GO THE SPEED LIMIT.
The speed limit is there to ensure safety of all campers.
12. PUT EVERYTHING BACK AS YOU FOUND IT.
Be sure to put everything back as you found it. If you moved picnic tables and fire pits, put them back in their original places.
13. TAKE NOTHING AND LEAVE NO TRACE.
This is the golden rule of camping. Campgrounds are part of a larger ecosystem, so you should make every effort to maintain the natural balance of the areas you visit. Always try to leave the campsite better than you found it. Do not leave anything behind.
MOST CAMPING ETIQUETTE IS COMMON SENSE. THE REST OF IT COMES WITH EXPERIENCE.
