The Legend and Legacy of Mampino Beach Resort: From Coastal Sanctuary to Premier Island Escape
Every great destination has a soul. For Mampino Beach Resort, that soul is a beautiful blend of rich history, untouched nature, and a family’s resilient spirit.
A Rich Heritage: The Roots of "Umampino"
Long before it became a coveted coastal getaway, this peaceful stretch of land in Zumarraga, Samar, was a quiet sanctuary. In the early 1900s, it was home to about fifteen pioneering families. Known originally as Sitio San Carlos, the community centered its life around a humble chapel, relying on the bounty of the sea and the fertile soil.
Local lore whispers of an older, grander name: Umampino. Over the decades, as the tongue naturally softened the word, it evolved into the simpler, modern Mampino—a name now synonymous with tranquility and warmth.
As the years rolled on, the land found a visionary guardian in the late Manuel Bulan Versoza, the former Municipal Vice Mayor of Zumarraga. He acquired hectares of agricultural and timberland, pouring his heart into the earth to cultivate thriving plantations of bamboo, mango, and sturdy gemilina trees. Herds of cattle roam freely, grazing on the lush, natural forage of this sprawling estate.
From Pandemic Pivot to Coastal Paradise
The story of how Mampino became a resort is one of brilliant, accidental inspiration.
During the two-year COVID-19 quarantine, the Versoza family planned to clear a portion of the land for vegetable farming. However, when faced with a shortage of agricultural resources, they didn't give up—they looked outward. Staring at their pristine, untouched shoreline, they saw a different kind of harvest: peace, connection, and natural beauty.
Officially opening its doors in March 2020, the transformation was spearheaded by the youngest Manuel alongside his eldest sister, Rowena. Together, they took their late father’s legacy and turned it into an oasis of outdoor fun and adventure.
"From simple birthday celebrations, joyful family reunions, and post-fiesta 'parumpag,' to dream weddings, Christmas parties, and church gatherings—Mampino has woven itself into the happiest memories of our guests, both big and small."
The Mampino Experience Today
Over the years, the resort has thoughtfully upgraded its physical space to better serve its guests. What began as a collection of simple cottages made of light, native materials has transitioned into a more comfortable retreat, now featuring durable concrete cottages designed with cozy overnight attics and a dedicated kitchen prepared to handle guest food orders. A convenience store, a videoke setup, and a versatile multi-function house now stand on the property, providing a comfortable space for entertainment and community gatherings. Just steps away from the shoreline, an integrated farm is also beginning to take shape, hosting native chickens, ducks, organic vegetable gardens, and fruit-bearing trees that add a serene, rustic farm-to-beach charm to the property.
Visitors and Location
Mampino has become a favored gathering place for visitors from the neighboring island municipality of Daram, Samar, as well as travelers coming from Catbalogan, Villareal, and the immediate local community.
Looking to the Future
There are continuous efforts to develop and expand the property. Future plans include opening up the area for outdoor recreation, hiking activities, creative photoshoots, and serving as a spacious venue for weddings and private events.
To offer a deeper connection to local culture, there are also plans to introduce a hands-on "sisi-picking" experience. This will allow guests to harvest rock oysters—the famous One Town, One Product (OTOP) of Zumarraga—directly from the shore.
As the day ends, the sunset at Mampino paints the sky in serene, beautiful colors, offering guests the perfect, meaningful setting to unload their worries, relax, and meditate.
