The vineyard that disappeared underground

Most wineries make an impression with grand buildings. Herdade do Freixo did something rather more surprising: it placed much of its winery underground.

Built on three levels beneath the vineyard, this extraordinary space was designed to protect the surrounding landscape while providing naturally stable conditions for producing and ageing wine. A guided visit reveals the architecture, the winemaking process and, most importantly, what all that careful work tastes like.

After the tour and tasting, take a leisurely drive through the countryside around Redondo before returning to Evoramonte.

Back at The Place, pour another glass on the terrace and see if you can identify everything you learned earlier in the day. This is serious research, so you may need a second glass.

With vineyards scattered all around us, The Place at Evoramonte is a very comfortable base for discovering Alentejo wine.

Our village deserves a day of its own

You do not need to get into the car to begin exploring. Step outside The Place at Evoramonte and you are already inside a historic walled village, directly beside one of the Alentejo's most distinctive castles.

Visit the castle, walk along the old walls and look out across the plains in every direction. Wander down the cobbled street and see how many of Evoramonte's hand-painted stones you can find. Visit the local craft shop, watch traditional work being created and take the time to notice the doors, walls and details that hurried visitors often miss.

Then stroll back to The Place, find a shady table on the terrace and look across the same countryside you have just seen from the castle.

Other people must drive to visit Evoramonte. When you stay with us, it is waiting immediately outside your door.

A perfectly lazy day

There is plenty to see around Evoramonte. But nobody said you have to see it all today.

Start with a long breakfast on the terrace. Have another cup of coffee while you decide what not to do. Find a comfortable chair in The Snug, choose a book, play a game or wander outside and watch the griffon vultures circling above the valley.

Later, collect something cold from the honesty bar, light the barbecue and settle in for an afternoon with nowhere else to be. As evening approaches, the landscape becomes softer, the shadows grow longer and the sunset begins its nightly performance.

Sometimes the best day of a holiday is the one without an itinerary.

At The Place at Evoramonte, doing absolutely nothing can keep you surprisingly busy.

Saturday in Estremoz

Here is our recipe for a particularly good Saturday in the Alentejo.
After breakfast at The Place, drive to Estremoz and spend the morning exploring its famous Saturday market. There are local cheeses, breads, cured meats, fresh produce and all the happy disorder of the bric-a-brac stalls.

Next, visit the Museu Berardo Estremoz. Its remarkable collection tells 800 years of Portuguese tile history and gives you a new appreciation for the colourful tiles you see throughout the country.

Then comes lunch at Casa do Gadanha, followed by a slow walk up through the old town. The climb is rewarded with cobbled streets, historic buildings and wonderful views back across the countryside towards Evoramonte.

Return to The Place in time for a glass of wine on the terrace and you will have completed a very satisfying Alentejo Saturday.
The only difficult part is deciding what to buy at the market.

The sunset ritual

There comes a point in the evening at The Place at Evoramonte when sightseeing stops and the sunset takes over.

You find a table on the terrace, open a bottle of local Alentejo wine and watch the entire valley begin to change colour. The heat softens, the sky turns gold and orange, and the plains seem to stretch even further into the distance.

There is no need to rush anywhere. Dinner is served at seven, the wine is already poured and the best entertainment in the Alentejo is happening directly in front of you.

Some holiday memories come from the places you visit. Others come from simply sitting still in exactly the right place.

Come and experience one of Evoramonte's legendary sunsets for yourself.

Pottery stop in São Pedro do Corval..

If you enjoy craft and making, São Pedro do Corval is a wonderful stop on the way to Monsaraz.

An entire village shaped by pottery gives you the chance to browse, buy and often see craftspeople at work.

Which makes the visit feel much more alive than a standard shop stop.

The Place is a very good base for these slower, more characterful days out.

You can discover the region’s traditions, then come back to somewhere that feels equally rooted in its setting.

Mainova and the story in the vines

Mainova adds another distinctive stop to the local wine picture.
With Portuguese grape varieties and a mix of integrated and organic production.

It is a reminder that Alentejo wine is not one thing, but a range of styles, methods and personalities.

That variety is one reason to stay a few nights at The Place rather than rush through.

You can try one vineyard one day, another the next, and still have time to actually enjoy where you are.

Local craft, local character

One of the pleasures of this part of the Alentejo is that craft still feels rooted in daily life.

In Evoramonte you can visit the local craft shop.

See local products and discover traditional work such as the Bonecos of Estremoz.

Staying at The Place means these experiences are not a rushed side trip.

They become part of the rhythm of your stay, mixed in with breakfasts, walks, quiet afternoons and evenings on the terrace.

Take a look at the local experiences around The Place.

Dinner on the terrace after a day out.

There is something satisfying about a day that ends close to where it began.

After exploring towns, vineyards or restaurants in the area.

Dinner back at The Place brings the focus back to the essentials: a good meal, local wine, quiet and a sunset worth lingering for.

The terraces are one of the great strengths of staying here.

They turn the evening into part of the experience rather than just the gap before bed.
