Poets Inn | Quarto do Eça

Sweet and cozy Quarto do Eça is our smallest but most popular room at the inn. Perfect for solo travelers or couples seeking a tranquil getaway.

Eça de Queiroz (1845–1900) is best known as a novelist rather than a poet, celebrated as one of Portugal’s greatest literary figures and a pioneer of realist literature in Portuguese. His novels and poetic political essays, established him as a keen observer and critic of Portuguese society, exposing its hypocrisies, injustices, and stagnation. Queiroz’s biting wit, keen eye for detail, and unflinching commitment to social critique made him both beloved and controversial during his time.

Poets Inn | Quarto do Brás

Named after a local Vila de Avô poet, Quarto do Brás is the largest room at the inn and is a family room that can accommodate two adults and one child.

Brás Garcia de Mascarenhas (1596-1656) was a Portuguese poet and soldier whose life and work embody the fervor and resilience of the Portuguese Restoration period. Born in Avô, near Coimbra, Mascarenhas lived during a time when Portugal was regaining its independence from Spanish rule, a cause he was deeply involved in as both a poet and a soldier. Known for his patriotic zeal, he fought in several battles, including the Restoration War against Spain, and was even imprisoned for his loyalty to the Portuguese crown. This duality as a poet and a man of action gives Mascarenhas a compelling presence in Portuguese literature.

Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen (1919–2004) is one of Portugal’s most revered poets, known for her elegant, crystalline language and deep connection to the natural world, justice, and the human spirit. A dignified and principled figure, Andersen was devoted to art, truth, and the pursuit of beauty. She spent much of her life in Portugal, though her Danish ancestry and well-traveled background gave her a cosmopolitan outlook. Andersen’s personality is often described as warm, resolute, and deeply moral; she cared deeply about social justice and freedom, values that resonate strongly throughout her poetry. During Portugal’s Salazar dictatorship, she was an outspoken critic, and later, after the revolution of 1974, she served as a member of parliament briefly, dedicating herself to the democratic ideals she held dear.
