The bright side.
Everything good in the Algarve rests on an abundance of sunshine. 300 days per year is the deal, but 'on average' is in the small print and the dataset is undefined.
After 8 years of drought water reserves almost totally replenished in 3 months last winter. Imagine that for a second. That took a lot of rain. And we got it.
Having been here 8 years, that was the worst winter ever for us. 2025 ended with less than 300 days of sunshine, I estimate 280 at best. Fortunately most of the rain happened in the 2 months of the year where we have the fewest guests.
This is almost perfect in the sense that we always hurt for guests who come to the Algarve and get anything other than 90% sunshine. We live here, we get all 300 days, or almost. But for those who come for a short holiday we find it unfortunate that they see more than 20 minutes of rain, vaporized within the hour, and during a few months, even seeing a cloud is beating pretty tough odds. But we do need some rain. And we got it.
This winter is turning out to be worse than last year. We are getting storms big enough to be named like what feels like every week and they last about a week. We've gone from Ingrid to Kirsten to Leonardo and we now look forward to greeting Marta, without much pause. We are very fortunate to have only lost a tree. Many are not so fortunate, to say the least. Our hearts go out to them.
Just as we hunker down one more time for a years worth of rain this week, a small message came to remind us why we are here. It's about the rest of the year, those 300 days when we do have guests.
So while the clouds are dark, this award, 8th year running, really helps to see the bright side.
Thank you so much, once again, for your kind reviews!
And we really hope to see you soon,
Once again, on the bright side 🌞
