PORTUGUESE FOOD & WINE • Portugal makes the list!

Three Portuguese restaurants have been named among the world’s best winery dining experiences, according to Wine Enthusiast.

Of 57 winery restaurants recognised worldwide, 22 are in Europe, with Portugal represented by three very different wine regions:

🍷Bomfim 1896 - Douro
At the Symington family’s historic Quinta do Bomfim in Pinhão, traditional Douro recipes are brought to life over a wood fire.

🍽️ Mesa de Lemos - Dão
Near Viseu, Michelin-starred chef Diogo Rocha serves contemporary Portuguese cuisine overlooking the vineyards of Quinta de Lemos.

🐖 Malhadinha Nova - Alentejo
Near Beja, much of what reaches the table is grown or raised on the estate itself - including the famous Alentejo black pigs.

PORTUGUESE FOOD & WINE • Know the difference between a Padaria and a Pastelaria?

Once a dying breed there are now many artisanal “padarias” (bakeries) springing up everywhere in Portugal. As well as different types of bread, you can also order a coffee to go with the quintessentially Portuguese “pastel de nata” (custard tart) – a must-try!

A “pastelaria” (pastry shop) or a “confeitaria” (confectionary) is where you might end up having breakfast every day, especially if the magic words “fabrico próprio’” (made on the premises) is advertised. Freshly baked daily sweet pastries with coconut, cinnamon or almond are simply delicious. Avoid the croissant however, it’s a quite a dull version of its French cousin.

PORTUGUESE FOOD & WINE • Ginjinha (or ginja) is a traditional Portuguese sour-cherry liqueur.

It’s made by infusing sour cherries (ginjas) in alcohol, usually with sugar and sometimes cinnamon or other flavourings. It’s typically served in a small shot-sized glass.

In Lisbon, the traditional way is:

Com elas = with the cherries in the glass
Sem elas = without the cherries

Don’t be fooled by the tiny glass in served in — ginjinha is typically around 20–24% alcohol!

PORTUGUESE FOOD & WINE • Portuguese fishermen were fishing for cod (bacalhau) as early as the 15th century, during the Age of Discoveries. Portuguese ships travelled to the rich cod grounds around Newfoundland. Salting and drying made cod exceptionally useful for long sea voyages: it could be preserved for months without refrigeration and provided a protein-rich food.

Over time, dry salted cod became deeply embedded in Portuguese cuisine and culture, despite Portugal having a long coastline full of fresh fish.
