Every stone tells a story.

One of the details I love most about Casa Jóia is the traditional Portuguese calçada that leads you through the gates and into the heart of the house.

What you see today began with piles of tiny black and white stones, a carefully created template — and the extraordinary skill and patience of local artisans placing each stone by hand.

Watching it come together was mesmerising.

Stone by stone. Pattern by pattern.

Until the finished courtyard became part of the story of Casa Jóia. 🇵🇹

❤️ The Heart of Casa Joia

Every home has one place where people naturally gather.

At Casa Joia, it’s the kitchen island.

When we designed the house, we wanted the kitchen to be far more than somewhere to prepare meals. We wanted it to become the true heart of the home – a generous, welcoming space that flows effortlessly into the dining and living areas, where family and friends are always part of the conversation.

At its centre sits a substantial marble island, chosen not only for its timeless beauty but also because I love cooking, baking and making fresh dough. Marble stays naturally cool, making it a wonderful surface for everything from pastries and pasta to flatbreads and pizza.

Over the years, this island has witnessed so much more than cooking. It’s where mornings have begun with coffee, curries have simmered on the hob, cocktails have been mixed for friends, and conversations have continued long after dinner was over.

Some of my happiest memories at Casa Joia have been made right here.

Beautiful design, generous proportions and quality finishes create an exceptional kitchen, but it’s the moments shared around the island that truly make it the heart of the home.

Some homes are built.
Others are carefully shaped over time.

Casa Joia began with an abandoned concrete structure and a vision of what it could become.

Rather than demolishing and starting again, we chose to work with what was already there — reinforcing the existing structure where needed and reimagining the possibilities. This approach reduced waste, respected the site and challenged us to think creatively.

Every detail followed a purpose.

The handcrafted entrance gates, inspired by Silves Castle.

The traditional Portuguese calçada, designed especially for the driveway and courtyard.

The beautiful local stone walls and steps, shaped on site by skilled craftsmen.

The gardens, created from a shared vision with landscape designer José Cavaco — beginning as beautiful watercolour sketches and becoming a tranquil outdoor paradise.

And throughout, a love of art, craftsmanship, architecture and creating spaces where people can gather, relax and make memories.

Casa Joia was never simply about creating a beautiful house.

It was about creating somewhere that feels like home.

A Moment at Casa Joia…

Beyond the Gate

Some homes tell you everything the moment you arrive.
Casa Joia chooses a different approach.

From the street, it sits quietly and confidently within the heart of Ferragudo.

Elegant, understated and wonderfully private, it gives little hint of what lies beyond.

Then you step through the traditional calçada entrance.

You pass into the peaceful courtyard, where soft blush-coloured walls, handcrafted artisan gates and climbing bougainvillea create a wonderful sense of arrival.
And then…

The garden reveals itself.

An infinity saltwater pool appears to melt into a second pool below. Mature Mediterranean planting surrounds generous terraces, while an outdoor whirlpool bath rests beneath the shade of an ancient olive tree.

Just beyond, a beautifully equipped outdoor kitchen and pergola invite long lunches, family celebrations and relaxed evenings that seem to stretch on forever.

One of the greatest joys of Casa Joia is that it doesn’t reveal itself all at once.
It invites you to discover it.

Sometimes, the most unforgettable places are the ones that keep their greatest surprise until the very end.
