Durante a baixa-mar, uma nascente termal submarina encontra-se com o Atlântico e eleva a água da piscina natural acima dos 30 °C. O resultado é um banho de mar aquecido pela atividade vulcânica de São Miguel, entre rocha negra e oceano aberto.
