Winter looks a little different in Madeira ☀️

MEET PRAIA DA MAIATA 🌊

In our last post, we introduced Praia da Alagoa and promised we’d soon show you the other surf spot we regularly visit — so here it is! 👀🏄‍♀️

Just around the corner from our home in Porto da Cruz, on the northeast coast of Madeira, Praia da Maiata has a more exposed, open-ocean feel, with Atlantic swell and a dramatic volcanic coastline.

Conditions can vary with the swell, wind and tide, making Maiata an exciting spot to explore as your surfing progresses 🌊

And the best part? It’s all right on our doorstep. Our surf camp accommodation is just minutes from the coast, while our surf school and equipment are based right beside the beach, making it easy to get in the water and explore both local breaks.

🌊 WELCOME TO PORTO DA CRUZ

Tucked away on the northeast coast of Madeira, Porto da Cruz is our home — a small coastal village surrounded by dramatic mountains, volcanic coastline and some of the island’s best-known surf spots.

For most of our lessons, we have two great surf spots on our doorstep: Praia da Alagoa and Praia da Maiata. Both are known for their consistent swell and sandy, volcanic beaches, making Porto da Cruz particularly well suited to beginner and intermediate surfers.

📍 This post is all about Praia da Alagoa

Alagoa is a beautiful little bay just minutes from our accommodation Madeira SurfCamp ☀️ Its sheltered setting and sandy bottom make it a fantastic place for learning and improving your technique. Conditions change with the swell, wind and tide, but the beach can offer fun, manageable waves for surfers developing their skills.

And one of our favourite things about staying here? Everything is close 🏄‍♀️

Our surf camp is a short walk from Alagoa and our surf school and equipment are located right by the beach, so getting from your room to the ocean couldn’t be easier. No long drives, no loading up the car — just check the waves from our rooftop terrace, walk to the beach and go surfing 🌊

In a future post, we’ll be taking you to Praia da Maiata, another of our regular surf spots.

Exploring Madeira with your family? The island has plenty of activities to try but for us, surfing is a must!

Learning to surf as a family is such a special way to spend time together in Madeira. From little ones catching their first waves to parents stepping out of their comfort zone, there’s something for everyone in the water 🤙🏽
