The name Monchique is believed to come from the Arabic term Munt Šāqir (or Monte Saquir), meaning “Sacred Mountain”. Over the centuries, the name evolved into what we know today as Monchique. 🌿

During the Al-Andalus period, Monchique was considered one of the sacred mountains of the Iberian Peninsula — a place of healing waters, powerful nature and deep spiritual energy. Even the Romans were drawn here by the thermal springs and called these waters sacred. ✨

Maybe that’s why so many people still come here searching for something slower, quieter and more meaningful.
